Tasting notes

Montepulciano rarely shows up as a rosé aged in amphora — the combination gives this wine a texture and earthiness that most pink wines simply don't have. On the palate, bright raspberry and wild strawberry sit against a chalky, mineral undercurrent from the terracotta aging, keeping the wine dry and focused rather than fruit-forward.

Cantina Indigeno's Giara Rosato is made from 100% Montepulciano grown on the winery's oldest vines, approximately 35 years old, in the clay-limestone soils of the Teramo hills near Montorio al Vomano. The vineyards sit at roughly 300 meters elevation between the Gran Sasso massif and the Adriatic coast, a position that delivers meaningful day-to-night temperature swings and retains natural acidity in the fruit.

Montepulciano's deeply pigmented skins lend the wine its characteristic deep cherry-pink color even with limited skin contact. Fermentation is spontaneous using only indigenous yeasts, without temperature control, additions, or sulfites. The wine is then aged on its lees in an 800-liter Tuscan terracotta amphora, which allows micro-oxygenation without imparting any oak character, and bottled unfiltered and unfined.

The Giara label designates Cantina Indigeno's amphora-aged wines from their oldest vineyard parcel. Across vintages, the line is defined by bright acidity, an earthy mineral quality from the ceramic vessel, and low alcohol relative to the grape's typical profile. No sulfites are added at any stage.

This is a dry rosé. The 2018 vintage in Abruzzo benefited from a warm, dry summer with good diurnal range in the Teramo hills, producing concentrated fruit with preserved freshness.

Works well with arrosticini, the traditional Abruzzese lamb skewers, where the wine's acidity cuts through the fat cleanly. Also solid alongside a charcuterie board with cured pork and aged pecorino, or with a simple tomato-based pasta. Serve at 54-58F.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Cantina Indigeno

Cantina Indigeno was founded in 2016 in Montorio al Vomano, in the Teramo province of Abruzzo, by four friends: Alfredo Giugno, Nicola Reginaldi, Fabio Petrella, and Loreto Lamolinara. Giugno and Lamolinara had previously run a microbrewery together beginning in 2013, giving the group a working foundation in spontaneous fermentation before transitioning to wine. Nicola Reginaldi, a sommelier, shaped the winery's focus on natural and low-intervention production.

The winery manages approximately 9 hectares of organically certified vineyards in and around Teramo. Most vines are around 30 years old and grow on stony limestone soils at roughly 300 meters elevation. The vineyards sit between the Gran Sasso mountains to the west and the Adriatic Sea to the east, approximately 8 kilometers from the coast. Cantina Indigeno also sources additional fruit from neighboring growers. The Giara cuvées are drawn from the oldest vineyard parcel, planted approximately 35 years ago.

In the cellar, every wine at Cantina Indigeno is fermented spontaneously using only indigenous yeasts, without temperature control. No fining, filtration, or sulfite additions are used at any stage. Vessels vary by cuvée and include fiberglass, stainless steel, and Tuscan terracotta amphora. The Giara line is aged in 800-liter terracotta anfore, which provide gentle micro-oxygenation without oak influence. Annual production is approximately 15,000 bottles across all wines.

Wine region

Abruzzo, Italy

Abruzzo occupies a strip of central-eastern Italy where the Apennine Mountains descend toward the Adriatic Sea. The region is one of Italy's most mountainous, with over 65% of its territory classified as mountainous terrain. This geography creates two distinct wine-growing environments: the warmer, lower coastal hills and the cooler, higher-elevation interior where diurnal temperature swings concentrate flavor while preserving acidity. The province of Teramo in northern Abruzzo sits closest to the Gran Sasso mountains and benefits from less fertile soils dominated by ferrous clay and limestone.

Abruzzo holds several appellations of note. Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC, established in 1968, covers the region's dominant red grape across all four provinces. Within it, the Colline Teramane subzone was elevated to DOCG status in 2003, recognizing the superior structure of Teramo-province Montepulciano. Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo DOC, created in 2010 when rosé production was separated from the red DOC, covers Montepulciano-based rosé wines across the region. Trebbiano d'Abruzzo leads white wine production, while indigenous varieties including Pecorino, Passerina, Montonico, and Cococciola are seeing renewed attention from quality-focused producers.
