Tasting notes

The combination of white Catarratto and red Pignatello co-fermented on volcanic pumice sand at 300 meters produces a color closer to Poulsard than to most Mediterranean roses, with aromatics that lean toward pomegranate, mandarin peel, and dried herb rather than the strawberry-candy register. The long saline finish is unmistakably Pantellerian and separates this from anything made on the Sicilian mainland.

Firri Firri is a co-fermented field blend of 85% Catarratto, 10% Pignatello, and 5% Inzolia from approximately 50-year-old Alberello Pantesco bush vines on a northeast-facing plot at 300 meters above sea level in Pantelleria. The soils are volcanic pumice sand, known locally as soki soki. The name refers both to the traditional four-toothed hoe used to dig the basin-shaped concas around each vine and to the nickname of the old vignaiolo who previously farmed the land.

Grapes were harvested as whole bunches at the end of September and processed together: three days of maceration, then fermentation and aging in vats. Before bottling, the wine is blended with 10% riserva perpetua, a solera-style reserve component. Total SO2 is 15mg/L. The resulting color is a pale, Poulsard-like ruby with lifted aromatics of pomegranate, mandarin peel, and liquorice, a juicy texture, fine refreshing tannins, and a long saline finish.

Tanca Nica is run by Francesco Ferreri, a Pantelleria native, and Nicoletta Pecorelli, originally from Sardinia. They farm biodynamically across roughly 3.5 hectares spread over 15 parcels within nine contradas, producing around 333 cases per year in total. The Alberello Pantesco vine-training system they use was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2014.

This bottling is classified as Terre Siciliane IGT and sits at 11.5% ABV, making it one of the lighter, more food-friendly expressions from the island.

Pour alongside grilled tuna, swordfish carpaccio, or shellfish in white wine broth. The wine's natural salinity and fine tannins also make it a strong match for aged Pantesco ricotta salata or fried capers. Serve well chilled at around 50-54F.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Tanca Nica

Tanca Nica was founded by Francesco Ferreri and Nicoletta Pecorelli, who returned to Pantelleria in 2016 after Francesco completed enology studies in Conegliano, Veneto and worked at the biodynamic estate Seresin in New Zealand. Francesco was born on Pantelleria and grew up working his grandfather's vines; Nicoletta is originally from Sardinia. The winery name comes from Pantesco dialect: tanca means small hilly land arranged in terraces, and nica refers to the place where thermal waters emerge from the seabed.

The estate farms 3.5 hectares across 15 parcels in nine contradas biodynamically, applying biodynamic preparation 500 and treating fungal pressure only with sulfur and copper when necessary. Vines are trained as Alberello Pantesco within basin-shaped concas, with cover crops planted to reduce wind erosion and then cut and buried into the concas before they compete for water. The concas are hoed by hand to maximize absorption of night dew. Total production is approximately 333 cases per year across all wines.

In the winery, grapes are harvested by hand and processed as whole bunches. Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts. The Firri Firri is fermented and aged in vats, blended with 10% riserva perpetua before bottling, and released with 15mg/L total SO2. Wines are bottled without fining or filtration.

Wine region

Pantelleria, Italy

Pantelleria is a volcanic island in the Strait of Sicily, positioned approximately 62 miles southwest of Sicily and 37 miles east of Tunisia. At only 83 square kilometers, it receives roughly 12 inches of rainfall annually and has no fresh water sources, meaning all vineyards are dry-farmed entirely. The island's soils are composed of volcanic pumice, known locally as soki soki, and lapilli fragments from volcanic eruptions. Two dominant winds shape viticulture here: the cool mistral from the north and the hot sirocco from the Sahara to the south.

Pantelleria holds DOC status and is best known internationally for Passito di Pantelleria, a sweet wine made from sun-dried Zibibbo (Muscat of Alexandria) grapes. Dry red and rose wines made from Catarratto and Pignatello fall under the Terre Siciliane IGT designation. The defining viticultural practice on the island is the Alberello Pantesco, a head-trained bush vine system in which each vine is planted in a shallow basin-shaped hollow dug into the volcanic soil to capture dew and protect the plant from constant winds. UNESCO recognized this practice as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2014, the first time an agricultural practice received this distinction.
