Tasting notes

The direct-press Cabernet Sauvignon juice keeps the wine lifted and aromatic where it could have been heavy, giving it a bright red-fruit pull and freshness unusual for 50% Cab in a hot year. The 10-day skin contact on the Grenache and Carignan adds grip without weight, landing somewhere between a structured rosé and a light red.

Don't Throw Plastic in the Ocean, Please is a Vin de France red from Anders Frederik Steen, made from 20% Grenache Noir, 30% Carignan, and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon grown in Valvignères, southern Ardèche. The vineyards sit on clay and limestone soils and have been farmed organically and biodynamically for decades, most of them tended in collaboration with Gérald and Jocelyne Oustric of Domaine du Mazel.

The 2015 vintage was the first heatwave year Steen experienced as a winemaker, comparable in intensity to 2003. To manage the richness of the fruit, he used more direct-press juice and fewer destemmed grapes than in cooler years. The Cabernet Sauvignon is pressed directly without maceration, while the Grenache Noir and Carignan are destemmed and spend 10 days on skins. The components ferment together with native yeasts, are aged in fibreglass vats, and were bottled in May without fining, filtration, or added sulfites.

The label was printed in 12 languages, one per bottle in a cardboard box, an expression of Steen's practice of using his wine labels to carry direct messages to the people who open them. No appellation rules apply; this is declassified as Vin de France, giving Steen full flexibility over varieties and winemaking decisions.

Serve slightly chilled at 54-58°F. Works well with oily fish like sardines or mackerel, charcuterie, or simple tomato-based pasta. The direct-press structure and bright acidity also make it a good match for fresh goat cheese.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Anders Frederik Steen

Anders Frederik Steen is a Danish vigneron-négociant based in the southern Ardèche village of Valvignères with his wife and collaborator Anne Bruun Blauert. He trained as a chef before becoming a sommelier at Noma in Copenhagen, where he worked from 2007, and later co-opened the restaurants Relae and Manfreds, establishing one of the first fully natural wine lists in Denmark while also running a wine import operation.

Steen began making wine in 2013, initially purchasing fruit from growers he admired and working alongside Jura winemaker Jean-Marc Brignot. He was drawn to Valvignères through his relationship with Gérald and Jocelyne Oustric of Domaine du Mazel, whose vineyards on clay and limestone slopes had been farmed organically for decades. Steen and Blauert began farming their own parcels in 2017 and today manage around four hectares, while continuing to work with fruit from the Oustric family in Ardèche and the Bannwarth family in Obermorschwihr, Alsace.

Steen's approach changes with each vintage. Red grapes are either destemmed by hand or pressed directly; blending decisions are made at harvest so that different varieties ferment together from the start. Wines are aged in fibreglass vats or old wood, bottled without fining, filtration, or added sulfites. He vinifies Alsatian grapes on-site in a dedicated cellar there, arguing that the cellar is itself part of the local terroir and cannot be separated from the fruit.

Wine region

Ardèche, France

The Ardèche department sits in southeastern France, roughly 50 kilometers south of Lyon and 100 kilometers north of the Mediterranean, bordered by the Rhône river to the east and the Massif Central to the west. The southern portion of the department, including the Ardèche river valley around Valvignères, has a Mediterranean-influenced climate with mild winters, hot dry summers, and cooling breezes from the Rhône that extend the ripening season. Soils vary across the region from granite and gneiss in the west to clay, limestone, and sandstone further east.

Most wines from the region carry the IGP Ardèche or the narrower Coteaux de l'Ardèche designation, though independent producers working outside those rules bottle under Vin de France, as Steen does. The AOC appellations of Saint-Joseph, Cornas, Côtes du Vivarais, and portions of Côtes du Rhône also fall within the Ardèche department. The IGP allows a broad range of varieties, and the southern Ardèche in particular has become a center of gravity for natural wine producers, including Le Mazel, Andrea Calek, and Le Raisin et l'Ange, alongside Steen.
