Tasting notes

Six weeks on skins gives the Deviner amber color and grip, but the Devin and Traminer aromatics keep it smelling like elderflower, lychee, and grapefruit zest. It is one of the more drinkable orange wines you will find, with a citrusy freshness that does not require any adjustment period.

Deviner is a blend of Devin and Traminer, two aromatic white varieties grown at the Majer Zemianske Sady estate near Hlohovec in western Slovakia. The 2018 underwent six weeks of skin contact, giving it an amber hue and a texture that sits squarely in orange wine territory without becoming heavy or tannic. No additives are used in the cellar.

Devin is a Slovak crossing of Gewürztraminer and Roter Veltliner, developed in 1958 at the Vine Research Centre in Bratislava. It produces naturally aromatic wines with notes of apricot, elderflower, and spice. Blended with Traminer, the Deviner leans into those floral and citrus qualities, kept fresh by the estate's cool-continental growing conditions.

The vineyards sit on loess and clay soils in the Danubian Lowlands near the River Váh and the foothills of the Little Carpathians. Slobodne has farmed biodynamically since 2016, becoming a member of Demeter (via the Austrian organisation, since no Slovak chapter existed at the time). Harvest is by hand, and fermentation proceeds with native yeasts.

The result is a lean, refreshing skin-contact wine that drinks more like freshly squeezed grapefruit and orange juice than a structured orange wine. It is approachable for newcomers to skin-contact styles while still showing the aromatic complexity the Devin grape is known for.

The citrus and floral profile works well with Thai green curry, Vietnamese spring rolls, or grilled white fish with herb sauce. It also pairs cleanly with fresh goat cheese or a simple arugula salad with citrus vinaigrette. Avoid heavy, tannic red meat dishes — this wine is built for lightness.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Slobodne Vinarstvo

Majer Zemianske Sady is a family estate in the village of Zemianske Sady, near Hlohovec in western Slovakia. The estate dates to at least 1912, when it operated primarily as a tobacco farm that also produced wine sold locally and to the art communities of Prague and Bratislava. War and forty years of communist rule forced the family off the property. The fourth and fifth generations recovered the land in the 1990s, replanted the vineyards, and reconstructed the cellar.

In 2009, sisters Agnes Lovecka and Katarina Kuropkova left careers in Bratislava to return to the farm alongside their partners Andrea and Miso Kuropka. The four launched Slobodne Vinarstvo in 2010, a name meaning 'free winemaking' in Slovak. The estate farms 17 hectares of vines as part of a larger ~500-hectare property that also includes field crops and forest. In 2016 they converted fully to biodynamic farming and joined Demeter, initially through the Austrian chapter before helping establish Demeter Czech & Slovakia.

Slobodne practices minimal intervention throughout. Grapes are harvested by hand, fermentation is with native yeasts, and no modern additives are used. The winery works with terracotta amphorae, Georgian qvevri, and concrete eggs in addition to conventional tanks. The Deviner is made with six weeks of skin maceration, giving it amber color and texture while keeping the aromatic profile of Devin and Traminer intact.

Wine region

Little Carpathians, Slovakia

Malokarpatská, or the Little Carpathians, is Slovakia's most historic wine region, located in the southwestern part of the country. Vineyards run along the slopes of the Little Carpathians mountain range at elevations between 150 and 300 meters. The continental climate delivers warm summers and cool autumns, allowing for a long growing season that helps aromatic white varieties retain freshness and develop complexity.

Soils in the region are a mix of loess, clay, sand, and sandstone. Around Zemianske Sady, near the Danubian Lowlands and the River Váh, sedimented loess and clay predominate. The dominant white varieties across Malokarpatská are Grüner Veltliner, Welschriesling, and Müller-Thurgau, though producers like Slobodne have focused on aromatic Slovak varieties including Devin and Traminer. The region covers approximately 5,588 hectares of planted vines.
