Tasting notes

The use of carbonic maceration on Syrah and Merlot gives the wine a lifted, juicy red-fruit character that plays off the savory grip of Carignan and the earthy weight of the Grenache varieties. No sulfites added, zero interventions in the cellar, and a production of only a few hundred bottles make this one of the more honest and singular expressions to come out of Banyuls.

De Paris A Paris Par Mer is a Vin de France red from José Carvalho Moreira, a.k.a. Zé Tafé, produced at Les 9 Caves in Banyuls-sur-Mer, on the Côte Vermeille where the Pyrenean foothills meet the Mediterranean. The 2018 is a multi-grape blend: Syrah and Merlot partially vinified by carbonic maceration, combined with juice from Carignan, Grenache Noir, Grenache Gris, and Grenache Blanc. No additives, no added sulfites.

The vineyards in Banyuls sit on steep, terraced slopes of ancient schist — some of the oldest bedrock in France — worked entirely by hand. The Mediterranean climate delivers over 320 days of sunshine annually, with the Tramontane wind providing natural ventilation and disease control. Each parcel is vinified separately before blending, using a rotating mix of vessels including stainless steel, old barrels, and amphorae.

This cuvée is a micro-production, typical of La Cave des Nomades, where individual bottlings range from 300 to 1,200 bottles. The label artwork is by artist Katja Stroph and is printed on cork labels — a nod to a tradition Zé remembers from his childhood in Portugal. The wine is labeled Vin de France, allowing Zé the freedom to blend across varieties and vinification methods outside the constraints of the local AOC rules.

Serve with charcuterie, grilled lamb merguez, or a Catalan-style bean stew. The wine's freshness and low tannin structure also make it a natural match with roasted chicken thighs seasoned with herbes de Provence. Works well lightly chilled at around 58F.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

La Cave des Nomades

José Carvalho Moreira, known as Zé Tafé, grew up outside Porto and holds degrees in cinema, art, and painting. He spent several years working on organic and biodynamic farms before arriving in Roussillon in 2010 to harvest fruit. A friend brought him to play guitar for a group of winemakers that included Manuel Di Vecchi Staraz, an Italian who had established a small estate in Banyuls. After tasting natural wine for the first time, Zé became a convert. His first vintage under the La Cave des Nomades label was 2014, a single cuvée called Le Pirate Qui Chante.

By 2018, Zé was farming across 12 parcels totaling nearly 8 hectares in Banyuls-sur-Mer, planted to Grenache Noir, Gris, and Blanc, Carignan Noir and Gris, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Merlot, Macabeo, Muscat Petit Grain, and Chardonnay — predominantly old vines with low yields. No treatments are applied in the vineyard, not even copper, and all vineyard work is done by hand. In the cellar, no sulfites are added and no other inputs are used.

Each parcel is vinified separately before blending decisions are made. Vessels rotate each vintage and include stainless steel tanks, old barrels, and amphorae of varying sizes. Zé makes his wines at Les 9 Caves in Banyuls-sur-Mer, a shared facility that also houses Bruno Duchêne and other local producers. Every cuvée is a micro-production ranging from 300 to 1,200 bottles, and each is assigned a name and label artwork by artist Katja Stroph, printed on cork labels. 2020 was Zé's last vintage at this location.

Wine region

Roussillon, France

Banyuls-sur-Mer sits at the southernmost edge of France on the Côte Vermeille, roughly 8 kilometers from the Spanish border. The Pyrenean foothills drop sharply to the Mediterranean here, with terraced vineyards clinging to slopes of schist and quartzite estimated to be nearly 500 million years old. Altitudes range from sea level to 965 meters across the commune. The climate is hot-summer Mediterranean (Köppen Csa), with approximately 532mm of annual rainfall concentrated in autumn, and the Tramontane — a dry, gusty northwesterly wind from the Pyrenees — providing natural airflow through the vines.

Roussillon sits in a geographic amphitheater bounded by the Pyrenees, the Corbières mountains, and the Mediterranean, and records more than 320 days of sunshine per year, making it the hottest and driest wine region in France. The dominant appellations include Côtes du Roussillon, Côtes du Roussillon Villages, Collioure, and Banyuls AOC — the latter historically known for fortified Grenache-based vin doux naturel. A growing number of producers in and around Banyuls-sur-Mer now work outside the AOC system under the Vin de France designation, giving them freedom to blend unconventional varieties and use non-traditional winemaking methods. Key grape varieties across the region include Grenache Noir, Gris and Blanc, Carignan, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Merlot, and Macabeo.
