Tasting notes

This is one of the most unusual field blends in the Languedoc: more than a dozen varieties, including Castets and Riveyrenc Gris that are nearly extinct, all co-fermented from two parcels on clay-limestone soils. The 2019 delivers dark blackberry, garrigue, and licorice with silky tannins and a lively acid line that keeps the weight in check.

Couleurs Réunies, meaning "the union of colours," is a field blend sourced from Jeff Coutelou's Flower Power vineyard (Font D'Oulette) in Puimisson, Hérault, with additions from the Peilhan parcel. The 2019 is the second vintage of this cuvée and draws from more than a dozen co-planted varieties, including Carignan, Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault, Mourvedre, Castets, Morastel, Riveyrenc Gris, and Terret Noir. Several of these grapes are on the verge of extinction and were planted in 2012 and 2014 specifically to preserve and re-examine old Languedoc diversity.

The wine is made with zero additions: spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, no fining, no filtration, no added sulfites, and bottled by gravity. The 2019 vintage produced a fuller, more structured wine than the 2018, with inky purple color, dark fruit concentration, silky tannins, and a backbone of vibrant acidity. Notes of blackberry, undergrowth, dried herbs, and licorice emerge with time in the glass.

Mas Coutelou's vineyards sit on clay-limestone soils in the village of Puimisson, just north of Béziers in the Hérault. Because the blend includes varieties outside standard Languedoc AOC regulations, the wine is labeled Vin de France. The estate has been certified organic since 1987, one of the earliest in the Languedoc, and Jeff farms 13 hectares with a focus on biodiversity, replanting hedgerows and olive trees alongside the vines.

The wine's dark fruit, earthy depth, and firm structure pair well with roasted meats, duck confit, or slow-braised lamb. It also holds up to game dishes and aged hard cheeses from southern France. Decant for at least 30 minutes before serving.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Mas Coutelou

Mas Coutelou is based in Puimisson, a village in the Hérault department just north of Béziers. The Coutelou family has farmed vines in the village for generations. Jean-François 'Jeff' Coutelou took over the estate and converted fully to organic farming in 1987, making Mas Coutelou one of the first domaines in the Languedoc to receive organic certification. He farms 13 hectares of vines alongside several hundred olive trees, which he planted to buffer his parcels from neighboring conventional farms.

The estate's soils are primarily clay-limestone. Jeff has progressively reduced his vineyard area from over 20 hectares to 13, replacing some parcels with olive trees and hedgerows to support biodiversity. Since 2013, he has planted hedges around individual parcels as barriers against runoff and erosion. He focuses exclusively on indigenous southern French varieties, including several near-extinct grapes such as Castets, Riveyrenc Gris, Morastel, and Terret Noir, which he co-plants in his Flower Power vineyard (Font D'Oulette).

In the cellar, Jeff adapts his approach to each variety and vintage, using spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts throughout. Techniques including whole-cluster or destemmed fermentation, varying maceration lengths, and different forms of cap management are applied depending on the grape and the year. Wines are bottled without fining, filtration, or added sulfites. Couleurs Réunies is a co-fermented field blend bottled by gravity.

Wine region

Languedoc, France

Languedoc stretches across the Hérault, Aude, and Gard departments along the Mediterranean coast of southern France. The climate is broadly Mediterranean, with long, dry summers and low annual rainfall. Soils vary considerably across the region, with clay and limestone the most dominant types, though schist, sandstone, and alluvial terraces are also found. Puimisson, where Mas Coutelou is based, sits just north of Béziers in the Hérault, where marine breezes from the south moderate summer heat and foothills to the north bring cooler air.

Languedoc holds 23 AOCs, with key appellations including Minervois, Saint-Chinian, Faugères, Pic Saint-Loup, and Terrasses du Larzac. The broader AOC Languedoc designation, formalized in 2007, covers red, white, and rosé wines across many terroirs. Producers who work with grape varieties outside the AOC permitted list, such as rare indigenous varieties, bottle their wines under the flexible Vin de France designation. The Languedoc leads France in organic wine production, accounting for 36 percent of all organically farmed French wine.
