Tasting notes

This is a high-stakes vintage from a year when extreme heat cut yields in half — what survived went into a wine with real nerve: tart red fruit, garrigue, and a peppery finish that keeps you reaching for the glass. The combination of old-vine Carignan on schist and Mourvèdre on clay-limestone gives it both spice and grip without heaviness.

Contre-Attaque is a red blend from Domaine Lampyres, made by François-Xavier Dauré in the village of Espira de l'Agly in the eastern Agly Valley of Roussillon, 20km from the Mediterranean. The 2019 vintage is a blend of Mourvèdre and Carignan sourced from organically farmed vines — the Carignan from 60-year-old plantings on pure schist, the Mourvèdre from 25-year-old vines on clay-limestone soils at 35–100m elevation. Both parcels are farmed organically with no synthetic inputs.

The 2019 vintage was the last for FX at Domaine Matassa, and one of the most difficult for growers in the eastern Roussillon. In late June, temperatures reached 48°C (118°F), causing sunburn damage that wiped out over 50% of the potential crop. What FX produced from the surviving fruit shows concentration and tension that reflect the adversity of the year. Vinification followed the domaine's minimal-intervention approach: spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, aging on fine lees, low sulfur at bottling, bottled unfined and unfiltered.

The wine is labeled as Vin de France, a classification FX uses across his range to maintain flexibility in blending and winemaking. It carries the character of the Agly Valley — schist-driven spice from the Carignan and meaty, herb-edged fruit from the Mourvèdre — alongside the lively acidity that defines the best wines from this part of Roussillon.

Works well with lamb merguez, grilled duck breast, or a board of hard cheeses and cured meats. The acidity and earthy spice also hold up to dishes seasoned with herbes de Provence or black olive tapenade.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

Producer profile

Domaine Lampyres

François-Xavier Dauré — known as FX — is the fourth generation of the Dauré family to grow grapes in and around Espira de l'Agly. The family held onto their vines through the collapse of the Vin Doux Naturel market in the latter half of the 20th century, selling production to the local cooperative for decades. In 2015, FX took full control of the family domaine and began converting to organic farming. That same year he joined Tom Lubbe at Domaine Matassa, working as Lubbe's right hand in the vines and cellar while simultaneously farming his own 16 hectares.

To manage both roles, FX was regularly in his vineyards before dawn using a headlamp. Neighbors joked he looked like a lampyre — French for firefly — and the name stuck. The domaine's first vintage was 2016: just 600 bottles of two cuvées made in his garage. By 2018, FX had converted a barn into a proper cellar and expanded his range. The 2019 vintage was his last working at Matassa, after which he devoted himself full-time to Domaine Lampyres.

FX farms organically on schist and argilo-calcaire (clay-limestone) soils around Espira de l'Agly. He has also incorporated homeopathic treatments including horsetail and nettle spray, with early forays into certain biodynamic preparations. In the cellar, he uses only indigenous yeasts, keeps sulfur additions minimal (added only at bottling), and bottles unfined and unfiltered. His winemaking approach is low-intervention: fermentation in stainless steel or fiberglass tanks, aging on fine lees, and no fining agents or filtration.

Wine region

Roussillon, France

Roussillon occupies the southernmost corner of France in the Pyrénées-Orientales department, bounded by the Corbières to the north, the Pyrenees to the west, the Albères to the south, and the Mediterranean to the east. Three rivers — the Agly, the Têt, and the Tech — cut through the region and help define its topography. The climate is among the warmest in France: strongly Mediterranean, with roughly one in three days dominated by the Tramontane wind from the northwest, which keeps disease pressure low and allows minimal intervention in the vineyard.

Soils across Roussillon are exceptionally diverse. The Agly Valley, where Espira de l'Agly is located, features schist, clay-limestone, and alluvial terraces. The area around Espira sits at the eastern end of the valley, roughly 20km from the Mediterranean, with gentle relief and high sun exposure. Key red grape varieties include Grenache Noir, Carignan, Mourvèdre, and Syrah. Appellations include Côtes du Roussillon, Côtes du Roussillon-Villages, and the historic sweet wine zones of Rivesaltes, Maury, and Banyuls. Many producers in the natural wine movement, including Domaine Lampyres, label their wines as Vin de France or IGP Côtes Catalanes for greater blending flexibility.
