Tasting notes

Coastview Vineyard sits above the fog line in the Gabilan Mountains at around 2,200 feet, and the elevation shows clearly in the wine: blackberry and violet aromatics are framed by cracked black pepper and dried herb savory notes, with acidity that keeps the palate taut and fresh. Subject to Change's zero-zero approach — native yeast, no additions, no sulfur — lets the site speak without interference.

Subject to Change sources this 100% Syrah from Coastview Vineyard, a roughly 30-acre site perched at approximately 2,200 feet in the Gabilan Mountains of Monterey County. The vineyard sits on shallow soils of decomposed granite and limestone, and is farmed by father and son John and Parker Allen, who use a herd of sheep in place of mechanical mowers. Coastal breezes off Monterey Bay moderate temperatures at this elevation, producing a long, cool growing season with significant diurnal temperature swings.

In keeping with Subject to Change's strict no-intervention approach, the wine is fermented with native yeasts and nothing is added or removed in the cellar — no fining, no filtration, no added sulfur. This is a zero-zero bottling, a direct expression of the fruit and site without any winemaking additions. The winery, founded in 2017 by Alex Pomerantz and based in Oakland, CA, works exclusively with organic and biodynamic vineyard partners.

The 2017 vintage from Coastview shows the dark-fruited, aromatic character this site is known for: blackberry, violet, dried herbs, and cracked black pepper, with a savory, structured palate and lively acidity driven by the vineyard's high elevation and cool nights. The wine is a single-vineyard expression, consistent with Subject to Change's focus on site-specific bottlings.

Works well with grilled lamb chops, duck confit, or braised short ribs. The savory, peppery character of the wine also holds up to aged hard cheeses and charcuterie. Try it alongside dishes with earthy elements like roasted mushrooms or lentil stew.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Subject to Change

Subject to Change Wine Co. was founded in 2017 by Alex Pomerantz and is based in Oakland, California. The winery focuses on single-vineyard expressions sourced exclusively from organic and biodynamic growers across Northern California. With the exception of their All Hours multi-vineyard label, every wine is a site-specific bottling intended to reflect a particular place and farming practice.

The winery works with vineyard and farming consultant David Rothschild to refine its viticultural practices. Coastview Vineyard, the source for this wine, is farmed by father and son John and Parker Allen, who use a herd of sheep for vegetation management in place of mechanical mowers or herbicides. The vineyard operates under biodynamic farming principles.

Subject to Change's winemaking protocol applies uniformly across all bottlings: native yeast fermentation only, with no additions or subtractions in the cellar. This means no fining agents, no filtration, and no added sulfur at any stage. The wines are described by the winery as raw expressions of the vineyards from which they come. Subject to Change has since ceased production as of 2025-2026, making existing inventory from earlier vintages the last available examples of their work.

Wine region

Monterey, USA

Monterey County spans roughly 100 miles of the Salinas Valley, framed by the Santa Lucia Range to the west and the Gabilan Range to the east. The Monterey AVA was established in 1984 and encompasses over 40,000 cultivated acres across ten sub-appellations. The region's defining climate force is cold Pacific air that funnels inland through Monterey Bay, aided by an enormous submarine canyon beneath the bay that keeps coastal water temperatures exceptionally low. This produces a long, slow growing season with significant north-to-south temperature variation: the northern end near the Bay runs cool and foggy, while the southern Salinas Valley warms considerably.

The Gabilan Mountains AVA, established in August 2022 and the most recently recognized appellation in the county, occupies the highest average elevation in Monterey County at approximately 2,370 feet. At this altitude, vineyards sit above the heavy marine fog layer, resulting in a cool, dry climate with lower humidity and reduced mildew pressure. Soils in the Gabilan range are primarily shallow decomposed granite and limestone, which limit vine vigor and concentrate flavors. The appellation was formally petitioned by Parker Allen of Coastview Vineyards. Rhone varieties including Syrah thrive in the Gabilan Mountains' combination of high elevation, sun exposure, and cool nights.
