Tasting notes

This is one of the only California Corteses you will find, and it makes a strong case for the grape in the Sacramento Delta. White peach, starfruit, and lemon peel come forward on the palate, anchored by a chalky minerality and a saline edge that comes directly from the clay loam soils of Lost Slough Vineyard. At 11.5% ABV, it is genuinely light and refreshing without being thin.

Tendu is the second label from Jill and Steve Matthiasson, launched in 2012 to produce affordable, organically farmed table wines from Italian varieties grown in California's Sacramento Valley. The name is French for taut, and that word describes the wines exactly. This Cortese is sourced from the Lost Slough Vineyard in the southernmost part of the Clarksburg AVA, near the historic town of Locke on the Sacramento River Delta.

Lost Slough Vineyard sits on deep clay loam soils in a site that stays cool overnight during summer, allowing the grapes to hold onto acidity through a long growing season. The vineyard is farmed organically by Steve Matthiasson. For the 2018 vintage, the grapes were whole-cluster pressed and fermented with native yeasts in neutral oak barrels. The wine was allowed to complete full malolactic fermentation, which enabled bottling without filtration, a consistent principle at Matthiasson.

Cortese is native to Piedmont in northwest Italy and is the sole grape behind Gavi. It is rarely planted in California, making this bottling a genuine outlier in the American wine landscape. At 11.5% ABV, the wine is light on its feet, dry, and driven by citrus and stone fruit character with a mineral, slightly saline finish that reflects its delta terroir. Minimum effective SO2 was used prior to bottling.

The wine is packaged in a short eco-friendly bottle sealed with a compostable and recyclable cork, consistent with the Matthiassons' commitment to reducing environmental impact across the production process.

The wine's bright acidity and saline finish make it a natural match for grilled fish, clams, and other briny shellfish. It also works well alongside dishes with lemon and herb sauces, pesto pasta, or a simple plate of vegetables with olive oil. Keep it cold and serve it young.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Tendu

Jill and Steve Matthiasson founded Matthiasson Wines in 2003 in Napa Valley. Steve began his career as a viticultural consultant in 1994 and co-authored the California manual on sustainable vineyard practices in 1999. His consulting clients included Araujo Estate, Spottswoode, Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, and Chappellet. Jill studied botany at the University of Pennsylvania, conducted research on ancient farming techniques in Israel, and studied soil health methods at UC Davis. The winery farms its estate vineyards organically with no outside investors.

In 2012, the Matthiassons and their California wine broker launched the Tendu label to produce organically farmed, minimally intervened table wines at accessible prices. Grapes for Tendu are sourced from the Sacramento Valley, where land costs allow them to work with Italian varieties rarely planted in California. Steve Matthiasson farms the Lost Slough Vineyard in Clarksburg organically and has worked with the site across multiple vintages.

Winemaking under the Tendu label follows a low-intervention approach: native yeast fermentation, neutral vessel aging, full malolactic fermentation where appropriate to allow bottling without filtration, and minimum effective SO2 at bottling. For the Cortese, the 2018 vintage was whole-cluster pressed, fermented with native yeasts in neutral oak, completed full MLF, and bottled unfiltered. Steve Matthiasson was named Winemaker of the Year by the San Francisco Chronicle in 2014 and by Food and Wine magazine in 2012.

Wine region

Clarksburg, California, United States

The Clarksburg AVA was established in January 1984 and spans parts of Yolo, Sacramento, and Solano counties in California's Central Valley, covering roughly 64,640 acres. The appellation sits at the confluence of the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers, and its defining climatic feature is the daily influx of cool breezes and fog that travel inland from San Francisco Bay. These delta winds keep Clarksburg significantly cooler than nearby Sacramento, enabling a long growing season with warm days and cold nights that preserves natural acidity in the grapes.

Soils across the Clarksburg AVA are primarily dense clay, silt, and loam deposited over centuries by the Sacramento River system. The Lost Slough Vineyard in the southern portion of the AVA near Locke sits on deep clay loam and sandy soils scattered with shell fragments, reflecting the site's history as former delta floor. Clarksburg is best known for Chenin Blanc, but its cool nights and mineral-rich delta soils also suit aromatic Italian white varieties like Cortese. The Merritt Island sub-appellation sits within the broader Clarksburg AVA boundaries.
