Tasting notes

At 11% ABV with zero sulfite addition and no skin contact, this is Chiaretto at its most transparent: pale salmon, tart red berry, clementine zest, and a clean saline finish that comes directly from the glacial moraine soils of Monte Mamaor. It is a genuinely mineral, low-intervention rosé from an appellation that rarely gets this treatment.

Chiaretto Ciaro is a direct-press rosé made from Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara grown on the morainic hill of Monte Mamaor in Valeggio sul Mincio, within the Bardolino DOC of the Veneto. The vineyard sits at roughly 200 meters elevation on glacially deposited soils of gravel, quartz, limestone, and clay. "Ciaro" means light color in the local dialect, a nod to the pale, translucent hue produced by pressing the grapes without skin contact.

Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts in fiberglass tank. The wine sees no skin maceration, no fining, no filtration, and no added sulfites or chemical products. At 11% ABV it is one of the lightest expressions of the Chiaretto style, dry and driven by acidity over weight.

The result is a wine with fresh red berry fruit, citrus zest, and a distinct saline minerality that traces directly to the mineral-dense morainic soils around Lake Garda. It drinks like a serious rosé from a producer who treats the appellation as a blank slate rather than a commercial formula.

The high acidity and saline finish make this a natural match for shellfish, particularly raw oysters, clams, or grilled prawns. It also works well alongside lean fish preparations and light cured meats like bresaola or prosciutto crudo. Serve well-chilled, around 45-48F, and drink young.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Vini Sassara

Vini Sassara is the project of Alessia and Stefano Bertaiola, based in Valeggio sul Mincio in the Veneto, just south of Lake Garda. Stefano is a third-generation winemaker whose family has worked the morainic hill of Monte Mamaor for over 50 years. Alessia brought a background in agricultural research and development to the estate when they took over the property together in 2007.

The estate covers 14 hectares in total: 10 hectares of vines and 4 hectares of woodland and olive groves. Upon taking over in 2007, Alessia and Stefano converted every plot to biodynamic farming and have been producing certified organic wine since that time. The grapes grown include the traditional red varieties Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, Molinara, and Rossanella, alongside whites such as Garganega, Trebbianello, Tocai, Moscato, and Fernanda.

Vini Sassara was launched as a separate natural wine project after years of certified organic production. The shift was driven by a desire to express the full character of their fruit and terroir with minimal intervention. Across all their wines, winemaking relies on spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, no fining or filtration, and no chemical additions. The Chiaretto Ciaro is direct-press with no skin maceration, fermented and aged in fiberglass tank.

Wine region

Veneto, Italy

The Bardolino DOC sits on the eastern shores of Lake Garda in the Veneto, stretching across rolling morainic hills between the lake and the city of Verona. The DOC was officially established in 1968 and covers red and rosé wines. Bardolino Superiore received DOCG status in 2001. Valeggio sul Mincio, where Vini Sassara is located, sits at the southern end of the appellation zone near the town of Custoza.

Soils throughout the Bardolino zone are glacial moraine deposits left by the retreat of ancient glaciers that carved the Lake Garda basin. The mix of gravel, pebbles, sand, clay, limestone, and quartz drains efficiently and is low in nutrients, a combination that concentrates flavor in the native varieties. Vineyards in the area range from roughly 100 to 250 meters above sea level. Lake Garda moderates the climate year-round through daily breezes called the Ora del Garda, which cool the vines and support slow, even ripening. The primary grapes across the appellation are Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara, the same varieties used in Valpolicella and Amarone, but producing a dramatically different style when grown here and handled with a light touch.
