Tasting notes

This is a pet nat with real weight — the 50-year-old Chenin vines on flint clay and limestone give it a mineral backbone that most ancestral-method wines lack. Green apple, white pear, and almond on the nose, with a fine, persistent mousse and taut acidity that keeps the wine focused from first pour to last sip.

Marie Thibault's 'La Roue Qui Tourne' is a pétillant naturel made from 100% Chenin Blanc grown on her single 3.5-hectare parcel in Lignières-de-Touraine, within the Touraine-Azay-le-Rideau appellation. The vines are approximately 50 years old, rooted in white clay and silex soils over a Tuffeau limestone bedrock, on a south-facing slope that is windier and drier than the plateau vineyards nearby.

The wine is made by the ancestral method: fermentation begins in 600-liter barrels, then the wine is bottled before fermentation finishes, completing it in the bottle with no additions. The result is a fine, persistent mousse with no disgorgement, no fining, no filtration, and no added sulphites.

The name translates to 'The Wheel Turns' — a reference to the cycles of farming and winemaking that shape each vintage. At 13% ABV, the wine is dry and substantive for a pet nat, with real structure behind the bubbles.

The estate has been farmed organically since Marie purchased it in 2010 and received Ecocert certification in 2014. Production across the entire domaine is small, around 10,000 bottles annually across all cuvées.

A natural match for oysters, clams, and grilled river fish — the flint minerality and high acidity cut through fat and brine. Works well with fresh goat cheese from the Loire, such as Crottin de Chavignol. Also try alongside shrimp tempura or lightly dressed seafood crudo.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Marie Thibault

Marie Thibault grew up in the Loire Valley without any family background in winemaking. After earning degrees in vegetal biology and oenology, she began her career in 2002 working at Domaine François Chidaine in Montlouis-sur-Loire, where she developed her focus on Chenin Blanc. She went independent in 2004 and in 2010 purchased her 3.5-hectare estate in Lignières-de-Touraine, within the Touraine-Azay-le-Rideau appellation.

The entire domaine is a single contiguous parcel on a gentle, south-facing slope that is drier and more ventilated than the surrounding plateau vineyards. Soils are white clay, silex (flint), and limestone over Tuffeau bedrock. Vines are approximately 50 years old and planted to Chenin Blanc, Gamay, Grolleau, and Côt (Malbec). Marie converted to organic farming immediately upon purchase and received Ecocert certification with the 2014 vintage.

Winemaking at the domaine follows a minimal-intervention approach. Grapes are hand-harvested; fermentation uses native yeasts. For 'La Roue Qui Tourne,' alcoholic fermentation begins in 600-liter barrels, and the wine is bottled before fermentation completes, finishing in the bottle in the ancestral (pétillant naturel) method. The wine is not fined, not filtered, and produced without added sulphites. Total production across all cuvées is approximately 10,000 bottles per year. Marie also co-founded the négociant project Un Saumon dans la Loire with her partner Frantz Saumon.

Wine region

Loire Valley, France

Touraine-Azay-le-Rideau is one of the smallest appellations within the Touraine AOC, covering approximately 50 hectares across six communes — Azay-le-Rideau, Cheillé, Lignières-de-Touraine, Rivarennes, Saché, and Vallères — in the Indre-et-Loire département. The vineyards sit at the confluence of the Loire and Indre rivers, at elevations of 40 to 80 meters, in a microclimate that is milder than the broader Touraine zone. Summers are warm and bright, with average July-to-September temperatures around 20°C and approximately 2,000 sunshine hours annually.

The appellation's subsoil is Tuffeau limestone, formed roughly 90 million years ago, which regulates water and mineral supply to the vines. Over this bedrock sit three main soil types: perruches (flinty clay, typical of the slopes), aubuis (warm, permeable clay-limestone), and aeolian sands with varying clay content. White wines must be 100% Chenin Blanc; rosés require a minimum of 60% Grolleau, often blended with Gamay, Malbec, or Cabernet Franc. The AOC was officially recognized in 1953, with rosé production added in 1976. Only around a dozen producers work within the appellation.
