Tasting notes

Catartico shows what Catarratto can do with even a short maceration: the 3-day skin contact pulls out orange peel bitterness, dried herb savory notes, and a resinous mineral finish that you rarely get from this grape. The chestnut barrel aging adds texture without toastiness, keeping the wine firmly in saline, citrusy territory.

Catartico is 100% Catarratto grown in the Fustuchera district of Alcamo, in western Sicily. The vines, planted in 2003, sit at 350 meters above sea level on clay-limestone soils with a west-facing exposure, trained by espalier with Guyot pruning. Longarico farms organically on the slopes near the Bosco d'Alcamo Nature Reserve, overlooking the valley of the River Freddo.

After hand harvesting, the grapes are destemmed and pressed into stainless steel tanks where they ferment with indigenous yeasts and macerate on the skins for 3 days. The wine then ages on the fine lees in chestnut tonneaux for 6 to 7 months, with no temperature control during fermentation. It is bottled unfiltered and unfined with around 10 mg/L of total sulfites.

Catartico is released only after at least 24 months in bottle. The result is a structured, amber-hued wine with a resinous texture and a long mineral finish. Chestnut wood lends a gentle savory depth without dominating the fruit. The appellation is Terre Siciliane IGT.

The wine is vegan-friendly. At 12% ABV it stays on the lighter side for an orange wine, while the three-day maceration gives it enough grip and texture to stand up to food.

Pairs well with grilled whole fish, pasta alle vongole, and dishes with capers or olives that mirror the wine's saline, bitter-citrus character. Works with aged sheep's milk cheeses and fried seafood. The resinous finish and tannic grip make it a natural match for dishes with olive oil-dressed vegetables or stuffed sardines.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Longarico

Longarico was founded in 2015 by Luigi Stalteri and oenologist Alessandro Viola. Luigi had been running a natural wine bar in Bologna; Alessandro had studied oenology and worked in Piedmont with winemaker Donato Lanati before returning to Sicily. The winery takes its name from 'Longuro,' the ancient Greek name for the lands on the slopes of Mount Bonifato near Alcamo. The project began in the ancestral home of Luigi's grandfather, whose family had previously farmed vines in the Fustuchera district. Alessandro Viola departed the project in 2022, and Luigi now runs the winery independently.

The vineyards sit at 350 meters above sea level in the Fustuchera district of Alcamo, adjacent to the Bosco d'Alcamo Nature Reserve in the Trapani province of western Sicily. Soils are clay-limestone. Farming is organic. The vines used for Catartico were planted in 2003 and are trained by espalier with Guyot pruning. Total production across all three Longarico labels is around 8,000 bottles annually.

Catartico is fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts, without temperature control, with 3 days of skin maceration. The wine then ages on the fine lees in chestnut tonneaux for 6 to 7 months. It is bottled unfiltered and unfined with approximately 10 mg/L of total sulfites, then held in bottle for a minimum of 24 months before release. No other additives are used.

Wine region

Sicily, Italy

Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean, located off the southern tip of the Italian peninsula. The island has a hot, dry Mediterranean climate with long, sunny growing seasons and minimal rainfall, which naturally limits disease pressure in the vineyard. Coastal breezes moderate temperatures, especially in western areas like the province of Trapani, where Catarratto is most concentrated. Elevations in interior zones such as Alcamo can reach several hundred meters, adding diurnal temperature variation that preserves acidity.

Sicily has 23 DOC appellations and one DOCG (Cerasuolo di Vittoria), plus the broad Terre Siciliane IGT that covers wines made anywhere on the island outside stricter area-specific designations. Key appellations include Etna DOC in the east, built on volcanic basalt soils; Alcamo DOC in the northwest, which requires a minimum of 60% Catarratto in its whites; and the island-wide Sicilia DOC, established in 2011 by a producer consortium to promote native varieties including Catarratto, Grillo, Nero d'Avola, and Frappato. Western Sicily, particularly the provinces of Trapani, Palermo, and Agrigento, accounts for the majority of Catarratto plantings.
