Product description

Cantina Indigeno Case Sparse Pinot Noir 2021 is a red blend of 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon grown organically on clay and limestone soils near Montorio al Vomano in the Teramo province of Abruzzo, central Italy. Grapes are harvested by hand from vines averaging 30 years old, then fermented using carbonic maceration with spontaneous native yeasts, without temperature control or added sulfites. The wine ages for eight months in fiberglass tanks (vetroresina) before bottling unfined and unfiltered at 14% ABV. Cantina Indigeno Case Sparse Pinot Noir 2021 takes its name from the scattered farmhouses that dot the surrounding hillsides.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Cantina Indigeno

Cantina Indigeno was established in 2016 in Montorio al Vomano by four friends who arrived at winemaking from fermentation, not from wine school. Alfredo Giugno worked as an accountant while brewing beer on the side; Loreto Lamolinara had been distributing craft beers. Together they founded the La Casa di Cura microbrewery in Crognaleto in 2013. The natural wine connection came through Nicola Reginaldi, a sommelier and pub owner in Teramo who had spent years studying minimal-intervention wines from across Europe. Fabio Petrella joined as the fourth partner. Early winemaking guidance came from the nearby Lammidia project, which helped the group orient themselves in the cellar.

From a first production of around 5,000 bottles in 2016, Cantina Indigeno quickly expanded, reaching approximately 25,000 bottles by 2018 through additional vineyard acquisitions. Today the estate manages around 9 hectares of organically certified vines on calcareous clay and limestone soils, predominantly planted with Montepulciano and Trebbiano but also including Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and rare indigenous white varieties. Vine age averages around 30 years. In the cellar, the approach never changes: native yeast fermentations, no temperature control, fiberglass and stainless steel tanks, no fining, no filtration, and zero added sulfites.

The portfolio reflects a genuine curiosity about what Abruzzo's terroir can do across different styles and varieties. The Sub Trebbiano Orange undergoes two weeks of skin maceration for its distinctive amber character; the Bianco Folk blends Trebbiano, Pecorino, and Montonico with 8 days of skin contact; the Boccia Bianco One Liter and Boccia Rosso One Liter are the table-wine end of the range, in generous one-liter formats. The Case Sparse Pinot Noir sits between these poles: a carbonic red made from non-indigenous varieties, but handled with the same no-intervention philosophy applied across everything Cantina Indigeno makes.

Wine region

Abruzzo, Italy

Abruzzo sits between the Apennine Mountains and the Adriatic Sea in central Italy, a geography that creates sharply different growing conditions within a relatively compact area. The province of Teramo occupies the northern quarter of the region and contains some of Abruzzo's most sought-after vineyard land. Within Teramo, Montorio al Vomano is a hill town in the upper Vomano river valley, roughly 40 kilometers west of the Adriatic coast and at the foot of the Gran Sasso massif. It is here that Cantina Indigeno farms its vineyards.

The Gran Sasso peaks at 2,912 meters and towers over the valley, serving as a climatic dividing line. Cold air flows down from the mountain at night, creating diurnal temperature swings of 20°F or more during the growing season. These shifts slow ripening, building aromatic complexity in the grapes while preserving the acidity that is the hallmark of the best Teramo wines. During the day, warm Mediterranean air moving in from the Adriatic keeps the growing season long and consistent.

The soils around Montorio al Vomano are predominantly calcareous clay, shaped by ancient river systems cutting west to east from the Apennines to the sea. This combination of drainage and mineral content suits both red and white varieties, though Cantina Indigeno has found that calcareous clay responds particularly well to the lighter extraction of carbonic maceration, which preserves freshness rather than grinding tannin out of the soil's natural austerity.

Abruzzo's DOCG classification, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Colline Teramane, covers 30 communes across the Teramo hills and represents the regional benchmark for structured reds. But increasingly, the hills around Montorio al Vomano are drawing attention for their work with non-traditional varieties under a minimal-intervention philosophy, a trajectory that Cantina Indigeno and contemporaries like Lammidia have helped define.
