Tasting notes

The solera structure gives this wine an unusually layered texture for a Burgunder blend — ripe melon and caramelized orange on the nose, then a savory, ginger-laced finish that keeps you reaching for the glass. The Opok and sandy marl soils from Ratscher Nussberg and Witscheiner Herrenberg add a stony, mouth-watering grip that cuts through the wine's inherent richness.

Burgunder SA is a non-vintage white wine from Hartmut Aubell of Der Rebenhof in Süd-Steiermark, Austria. It is a solera-style blend of Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, and Chardonnay (each at roughly 33%), drawing from multiple harvests spanning 2010 through 2014 and beyond. The grapes come from 20-40 year old vines across two named vineyards: Witscheiner Herrenberg, with its sandy marl and gravel soils, and Ratscher Nussberg, a site dominated by Opok, the local name for the region's compressed, calcareous grey marl formed from ancient seabed deposits.

In the cellar, Aubell ferments spontaneously with native yeasts, using whole clusters and short skin contact. The wine ages in a combination of stainless steel and neutral wooden barrels before being bottled without fining or filtration, and without added sulfur. Aubell holds winemaking details close, but the approach is unambiguous: nothing added, nothing taken away.

The wine opens with aromas of caramelized orange, fresh grated ginger, and ripe melon, with a herbaceous, floral finish. On the palate it is juicy and mouth-watering, with bright acidity that keeps the honey and tropical fruit notes from feeling heavy. The multi-vintage blend adds structural depth that a single-year bottling from these grapes would not achieve.

Der Rebenhof holds Demeter biodynamic certification, awarded in 2016. Aubell has farmed biodynamically since 2013, with no additions in the vineyard or cellar.

Pair with roasted pork belly with fennel, pan-seared trout with brown butter and capers, or a board of aged alpine cheeses like Vorarlberger Bergkase. The wine's savory ginger and herbal finish also holds up to dishes with turmeric or ginger-forward spice.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Der Rebenhof

Der Rebenhof is a 9.5-hectare estate near Ehrenhausen in Süd-Steiermark, situated close to the Slovenian border. The property has been in Hartmut Aubell's family since his great-grandfather Ludwig Kempl first acquired it in 1924, though the estate produced only grapes, not wine, until Aubell took over in 2008 and became the first in the family to vinify. The winery also operates a small bed and breakfast on the property.

Aubell began farming biodynamically in 2013 and received Demeter certification in 2016. He works with old vines on two primary vineyard sites: Witscheiner Herrenberg, composed of sandy marl and gravel, and Ratscher Nussberg, whose soils are predominantly Opok — the local grey calcareous marl equivalent to the Ponca found across the border in Collio and Brda. Vines on these sites range from 20 to 40 years old, and the steep slopes require all work to be done by hand.

Aubell is known in the Austrian natural wine community for deliberate restraint around technical disclosure. His approach in the cellar is non-interventionist: native yeast fermentation, no fining, no filtration, and no sulfur additions at bottling. Maturation takes place across multiple vessel types including stainless steel and neutral wood. The Burgunder SA is a solera-style blend assembled from several consecutive vintages, bottled when Aubell determines the wine is ready.

Wine region

Southern Styria, Austria

Südsteiermark is Austria's southernmost wine-growing region, running along the Slovenian border near the towns of Ehrenhausen, Gamlitz, and Leutschach. The climate sits at the intersection of Alpine continental influences from the west and warm, humid Adriatic air from the south. This creates significant diurnal temperature swings in autumn, allowing grapes to ripen fully while retaining acidity. Rainfall is roughly twice that of Burgenland, keeping the rolling hillside vineyards intensely green and reducing irrigation needs.

The region covers approximately 2,788 hectares of vines, over 91% planted to white varieties. Sauvignon Blanc is the flagship grape, but Pinot Blanc, Morillon (Chardonnay), Pinot Gris, Welschriesling, and Muskateller are all significant. Soils vary considerably by site: sandy marl and gravel in places like Witscheiner Herrenberg, and Opok — a compressed, fine-grained calcareous marl formed from ancient Paratethys seabed deposits — in sites such as Ratscher Nussberg and around Leutschach. The Südsteiermark DAC appellation was formally established to recognize the region's distinct terroir, and handpicking is required by law across all three Styrian DAC appellations.
