Tasting notes

Nero Buono is one of the rarest grapes in Italy, grown almost exclusively in a 90-hectare pocket of the Lepini Mountains near Cori, and Sete is among the very few natural producers working with it. The wine delivers dark cherry, blackberry, and earthy forest floor with brisk acidity and soft tannins that are characteristic of the variety at its most transparent and unmanipulated.

Buco Nero is a 100% Nero Buono from Sete Vini Naturali, a project based in Priverno, in the Province of Latina, southern Lazio. Nero Buono is a rare indigenous grape native to the Cori area of the Lepini Mountains, roughly 55 kilometers south of Rome. It is one of the most deeply pigmented red grapes in Italy, historically used as a blending variety for its anthocyanin concentration, but increasingly vinified on its own by producers focused on native varieties.

Sete sources old-vine parcels from local elderly farmers in the Amaseno River Valley, working the vineyards biodynamically with no chemical inputs. Grapes are fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged for 8 months on the lees in neutral fiberglass tanks, a vessel chosen to preserve freshness and primary fruit character without adding oak influence.

The wine is bottled without added sulfites, unfined, and unfiltered. On the palate, Nero Buono delivers juicy dark fruit, vivid acidity, and naturally velvety tannins with earthy, spicy depth. With age, notes of licorice and dark cocoa emerge, as the grape's natural structure allows it to develop in bottle.

Buco Nero is labeled as Lazio IGT, as the wine is made from 100% Nero Buono rather than the blended Cori DOC format, which requires Montepulciano and Cesanese alongside Nero Buono.

Nero Buono's vivid acidity and medium body make it a strong match for Rome's cucina povera classics: coda alla vaccinara, chicken alla cacciatora, or lamb with herbs. It also works well alongside aged Pecorino Romano or a plate of cured meats from the Latina countryside.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Sete

Sete Vini Naturali was founded in 2013 by Emiliano Giorgi and Arcangelo Galuppi in Priverno, a small town in the Province of Latina, approximately 100 kilometers south of Rome and close to the Circeo National Park. The project began as a response to the widespread abandonment and uprooting of old vineyards in the Amaseno River Valley, caused by decades of economic decline in the area. Sete either purchases grapes from or rents parcels from elderly local farmers in the municipalities of Priverno, Roccagorga, Maenza, and Sonnino, vinifying each plot separately.

Farming at Sete follows biodynamic principles with no chemical inputs in the vineyard. The grapes they work are predominantly forgotten indigenous varieties: Ottonese, Cesanese, Nero Buono, Bonamico, Malvasia Puntinata, and Moscato Bianco, among others. All vineyard and cellar work is done by hand. Sete is certified organic through Suolo e Salute.

Winemaking at Sete involves spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts and aging on the fine lees in fiberglass tanks. No sulfites are added at any stage, and all wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered. There are no oenologists or external winemakers involved in production. Buco Nero ferments and ages for 8 months in fiberglass vats, preserving the grape's natural fruit character and acidity without oak influence.

Wine region

Lazio, Italy

Lazio is a central Italian region of roughly 28,000 hectares under vine, stretching from the Tyrrhenian coast in the west to the foothills of the Apennines in the east, with Rome at its center. The region is predominantly hilly, with soils of volcanic origin — tuff, basalt, and pozzolana — particularly concentrated around the Alban Hills, Lake Bolsena, and the Lepini Mountains. Maritime breezes from the Tyrrhenian Sea moderate summer heat, while higher elevations produce meaningful diurnal temperature swings that preserve acidity in the grapes. Lazio holds 3 DOCGs, 27 DOCs, and multiple IGT designations.

Lazio's best-known wines are whites based on Trebbiano and Malvasia, led by Frascati DOCG and Frascati Superiore DOCG southeast of Rome. Cesanese del Piglio is the region's only red DOCG, producing structured wines from the indigenous Cesanese grape. The Cori DOC, on the northwestern slopes of the Lepini Mountains, is home to Nero Buono di Cori and Bellone, two of Lazio's most distinctive native varieties. Red wines from Lazio — including those from Sangiovese, Cesanese, and Nero Buono di Cori — are undergoing a quality renaissance, driven largely by a new generation of natural and organic producers working with old-vine parcels and indigenous grapes.
