Blue Bottle sorts its coffee by what you want from it rather than by origin, and Balanced is the one aimed at the middle: sweet, even, nothing sticking out.

The bag lists caramel, lemon zest and cocoa. That is a wide spread for one cup, and it is the point, a little citrus lift over a sweet base so it works black and does not disappear into milk.

The Brand

Blue Bottle Coffee

James Freeman was a clarinet player before he was a roaster. In 2002 he started roasting small batches in a rented shed in Oakland's Temescal district, delivering to subscribers, and in 2005 he opened a kiosk in Hayes Valley in San Francisco.

Blue Bottle arrived when American coffee was still overwhelmingly dark-roasted, and it is one of the companies usually credited with turning that around: lighter roasts, single origins named on the bag, coffee treated as a food with a season rather than a commodity.

It has since grown well past San Francisco, into Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo and Seoul.

Pantry items are fulfilled by our partner retailer in California, so they ship on their own and will not arrive in the same box as your wine. Order both and you should expect two parcels, often on different days.

You will receive tracking for the pantry parcel within 3-4 business days.

Wine requires an adult signature on delivery. Pantry items do not, so they can be left at your door like any ordinary parcel.

Most of what we carry is shelf stable until it is opened, and would rather sit in a cool dark cupboard than on a sunny counter. Anything that needs refrigerating once opened says so on the label.
