Tasting notes

The 2019 pushes Picpoul to its highest proportion yet in this blend, which sharpens the citrus edge and keeps the wine from feeling heavy despite the warm Madera growing season. Marsanne and Roussanne fill in with stone fruit and lanolin texture, while the granitic schist soils at 1,300 feet give the whole thing a dry, mineral backbone that holds it together.

The 2019 Love White is a Rhone-inspired blend sourced entirely from Love Ranch, a certified organic estate in the Madera AVA, located 35 miles south of Yosemite National Park at 1,300 feet elevation. The vineyard sits on granitic schist soils and is farmed by Oscar Ramos. Broc has sourced from Love Ranch since 2013, and it remains the anchor of this bottling. The blend is 38% Marsanne, 24% Picpoul, 22% Roussanne, and 16% Grenache Blanc.

The Picpoul vines at Love Ranch were grafted from cuttings sourced at Rorick Vineyard. In 2018 Picpoul was added to the Love White blend for brightness; the 2019 vintage increases that proportion further. Grapes were harvested in August to preserve natural acidity, a deliberate call given the warm Central Valley climate. A large canopy is maintained on the vines throughout the season to shade fruit from the heat and prevent sugar spikes, keeping alcohol naturally lower.

All four varieties were fermented separately using only native yeasts, with no added nutrients, enzymes, or other fermentation agents. The wines were then aged in neutral French oak barrels for 8 months with no added SO2 during fermentation or aging. Malolactic fermentation was allowed to proceed naturally. The wine is unfiltered and may contain light sediment.

The Love wines are Broc's larger-production, approachable range, designed for everyday drinking while maintaining the same minimal-intervention principles applied to all Broc wines. Trace SO2 is added only at bottling.

Drink this with roasted chicken thighs with herbs, grilled halibut with lemon butter, or a simple plate of aged goat cheese and olives. The wine's acidity and light texture make it flexible across lighter proteins and vegetable-forward dishes. It also works well slightly chilled alongside a fennel and citrus salad.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Broc Cellars

Broc Cellars was founded by Chris Brockway, who grew up in Omaha, Nebraska, worked in restaurants in Nebraska and the Pacific Northwest, and eventually moved to California to study winemaking. He completed his oenology degree at Cal State Fresno in 2002 before moving to the Bay Area. Early exposure to San Francisco's first natural wine bar, Terroir, shaped his direction decisively away from conventional winemaking. Broc Cellars moved into its first Berkeley warehouse space in 2008 and has operated in the city's Gilman District since.

Broc Cellars operates as a negociant winery, sourcing organically farmed fruit from family-owned vineyards across California, from Madera and Paso Robles to Mendocino and Solano County. In 2021, Brockway took over farming operations at Fox Hill Vineyard in Mendocino, and in 2023 Broc Cellars purchased the 60-acre site outright, making it the winery's first estate property. Fox Hill received CCOF certified organic status in 2024. All other sourced vineyards are also required to be organically farmed, several holding CCOF certification.

Every wine at Broc Cellars is made using spontaneous fermentation with only native yeasts and bacteria present on the grapes. No nutrients, commercial yeast, enzymes, tannins, or other additives are used during fermentation. Sulfur is not added during fermentation or aging. A trace amount of SO2 may be added at bottling depending on the wine and vintage. Grapes are harvested at lower Brix levels to preserve natural acidity and keep alcohol in check. The Love White series uses separate variety fermentations followed by blending, with aging in neutral French oak.

Wine region

Madera, USA

The Madera AVA sits in California's San Joaquin Valley, established as an official viticultural area in 1984. The region spans roughly 230,000 acres across Madera and portions of Fresno counties, bounded by the San Joaquin River to the southwest and the Sierra Nevada foothills to the east. The climate is hot and dry, with warm summers and mild winters. Rainfall is sparse, averaging 11 to 12 inches per year. The valley floor sits at low elevation, but a small sub-region known as the Madera Foothills rises significantly higher, where soils shift from alluvial loam to granitic schist and temperatures are moderated by prevailing winds.

Madera has historically been known for high-volume production and fortified, port-style wines made from Muscat. The foothills sub-region is a different story. Love Ranch, which sits at 1,300 feet in this foothill zone, produces Rhone varieties including Marsanne, Roussanne, Grenache Blanc, Picpoul, and Viognier on granitic schist soils well-suited to producing lower-sugar, aromatic whites. Prevailing winds cool the vineyard during summer months, and a deliberately larger canopy disperses solar energy to slow sugar accumulation. Very few producers work with fruit from this elevated foothill area.
