Tasting notes

The combination of light skin contact and the ancestral method on Trebbiano d'Abruzzo produces a wine that is simultaneously nutty, tart, and floral — a profile you rarely see in Italian sparkling. At 10.5% ABV with zero added sulfur, it drinks with unusual energy and immediacy straight out of the fridge.

Bianco Gas is Cantina Indigeno's ancestral-method sparkling wine made from 100% Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, hand-harvested from organically farmed vineyards in the hills around Montorio al Vomano in the Teramo province. Vines grow in stony limestone and clay soils at around 300 meters elevation, where Adriatic breezes and Apennine mountain air create significant diurnal temperature variation.

Fermentation starts with native yeasts in tank without temperature control, and the wine is bottled before fermentation completes, trapping carbon dioxide to produce a natural fizz. No sulfur dioxide is added at any stage. The wine is disgorged, then bottled unfined and unfiltered. A light skin contact period gives the wine a faint amber tint and a touch of textural grip alongside the bubble.

At 10.5% ABV, Bianco Gas is genuinely low-alcohol. The perlage is soft and frothy rather than aggressive, characteristic of the ancestral method. On the nose, expect bread dough and floral notes with a slight reductive edge that blows off quickly. The palate is tart stone fruit and a hint of nuttiness, with the zippy, high-acid spine typical of Trebbiano d'Abruzzo.

Cantina Indigeno was founded in 2016 by four friends — Alfredo Giugno, Nicola Reginaldi, Fabio Petrella, and Loreto Lamolinara — who came out of the craft beer world before turning to wine. The 2018 vintage was a significant production year for the project, with output reaching approximately 25,000 bottles following vineyard acquisitions.

Serve with fried seafood, oysters on the half shell, or a platter of salumi and soft cheeses. The high acidity and fine carbonation cut through fat and salt effectively. Works equally well as a standalone aperitivo.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Cantina Indigeno

Cantina Indigeno was founded in 2016 by four friends in Montorio al Vomano, in the Teramo province of Abruzzo. Alfredo Giugno, Nicola Reginaldi, Fabio Petrella, and Loreto Lamolinara came from a background in craft beer fermentation — Giugno and Lamolinara had previously opened a microbrewery together in 2013 — before transitioning to wine. Nicola Reginaldi, a sommelier since 2013, shaped the project's direction toward natural and minimal-intervention winemaking.

The winery manages 9 hectares of organically certified vineyards around Teramo, with most vines approximately 30 years old growing in stony limestone soils. They also source additional organically grown grapes from nearby farmers. The first vintage in 2016 produced around 5,000 bottles; by 2018, output reached approximately 25,000 bottles following vineyard acquisitions. The US and Japan are their primary export markets.

Across all wines, Cantina Indigeno uses no temperature control, no fining, no filtration, and no added sulfites at any point. Grapes are hand-harvested, fermentation is spontaneous with indigenous yeasts, and aging occurs primarily in fiberglass and stainless steel, with occasional use of amphora. The Bianco Gas specifically undergoes light skin maceration before bottle refermentation via the ancestral method, then disgorgement, with zero SO2 additions throughout.

Wine region

Abruzzo, Italy

Abruzzo occupies central-eastern Italy where the Apennine Mountains descend toward the Adriatic Sea. The province of Teramo, in the north of the region, sits at higher elevations with stony limestone and clay soils and pronounced day-to-night temperature swings that preserve acidity in white grapes. The geography creates two distinct climatic influences: Mediterranean warmth along the coast and cooler, more continental conditions in the mountainous interior.

Trebbiano d'Abruzzo leads white wine production in the region; when carefully farmed it can produce complex, long-lived whites rather than neutral blending material. Indigenous varieties including Pecorino, Passerina, Cococciola, and Montonico are seeing renewed attention from quality-focused producers. The Colline Teramane DOCG, established in 2003, recognizes the superior potential of the Teramo hills specifically for Montepulciano. Most of Cantina Indigeno's wines, including Bianco Gas, are classified as Vino da Tavola, reflecting the producers' preference for working outside DOC restrictions.
