Tasting notes

This is Bobal stripped of the heavy extraction it was historically farmed for: three days of skin contact, stainless steel aging, and zero additions produce a wine that is vivid, saline, and genuinely refreshing. At 11% ABV with a snap of cherry-skin acidity and a thyme-and-violet nose, it drinks more like a serious natural Gamay than anything most people expect from a Spanish red.

Partida Creus sources the Bobal for this wine from old bush vines in Narboneta, in the province of Cuenca, roughly 350 meters above sea level and about 100 kilometers inland from their cellar in Bonastre. Bobal is native to that high-altitude interior terrain, where clay-limestone soils and a dry, continental climate push the variety to ripen several weeks later than grapes grown in Penedès itself. Massimo and Antonella travel south each harvest to hand-pick the fruit in the cool of the morning before returning to Bonastre for processing.

In the cellar, the wine undergoes spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts and a short three-day skin maceration. Given Bobal's thick skins, three days is enough to pull structure and color without excessive extraction. After fermentation, the wine rests in stainless steel for approximately seven months before bottling with no fining, no filtration, and no added sulfites.

The result is a pale-to-medium ruby wine with more transparency than its grape's reputation might suggest. On the nose: violet, fresh red fruit, and a distinct herbal note of thyme. The palate is juicy and light-footed, with sour cherry, ripe plum, a fine thread of black pepper, and a saline, clean finish. Acidity is high and alcohol sits at just 11%, keeping this nimble and food-friendly.

Bobal is one of Spain's most planted red varieties but has long been overlooked in favor of Tempranillo and Garnacha. Partida Creus treats it as a serious single-varietal wine from an obscure, historically significant terroir. The wine falls outside the Penedès DO framework precisely because the fruit is sourced from Cuenca, but it is vinified and bottled at the Bonastre estate.

At 11% with high acidity, this works well chilled alongside jamón ibérico, Spanish-style charcuterie, or grilled lamb chops with herbs. The saline finish also makes it a natural partner for aged Manchego or a simple tomato-based rice dish. Serve at around 55-58°F.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

Producer profile

Partida Creus

Partida Creus was founded around 2001 by Antonella Gerosa and Massimo Marchiori, architects originally from Piedmont, Italy, who had relocated to Barcelona before moving further out to the village of Bonastre in the Baix Penedès. The name refers to the stone crosses historically used to mark the boundaries between land holdings in the area. Unable to find wines they wanted to drink locally, they began farming abandoned vineyards planted with indigenous Catalan varieties that neighboring growers considered obsolete and low-yielding.

Their vineyards in and around Bonastre are farmed organically, with no synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. Massimo and Antonella have also taken on plots outside the immediate area when the variety warranted it, including Bobal bush vines in Narboneta, Cuenca, roughly 100 kilometers inland. Vineyard work is done by hand throughout, and the team uses a donkey and a mule for some fieldwork. All fruit is hand-harvested.

In the cellar, Partida Creus practices full non-intervention: spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, no fining or filtration, and no added sulfur at any stage. Massimo and Antonella ceased sulfur additions entirely in 2013. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel, and most single-varietal wines rest in steel before bottling, though from the 2021 vintage onward some cuvées saw elevage in oak or acacia barrels. The BB Bobal 2020 was rested in stainless steel for approximately seven months before bottling unfined and unfiltered.

Wine region

Penedès, Spain

Penedès is a DO located southwest of Barcelona in Catalunya, stretching roughly halfway between the city and Tarragona along the Mediterranean coast. The region is divided into three subzones by altitude: Baix Penedès (below 250 meters, warmest, closest to the coast), Mitja Penedès (up to 500 meters, the heartland of Cava production), and Alt Penedès (up to 850 meters, coolest, best suited to aromatic whites). Partida Creus is based in Bonastre, a village in the Massís de Bonastre within Baix Penedès, near Tarragona.

Soils across Penedès range from sandy coastal soils to clay-limestone and alluvial deposits in the river valleys, with chalky limestone dominating at higher elevations. The climate is Mediterranean: hot, dry summers, mild winters, and rainfall concentrated in spring and autumn. The region is best known internationally for Cava production centered on Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, but Penedès DO covers still red and white wines from a wide range of varieties including the indigenous Xarel-lo, Macabeu, Parellada, Sumoll, and Trepat, alongside international grapes. As of the 2025 harvest, Penedès became the first wine appellation with 100% certified organic production.
