Tasting notes

Pinot Grigio at 700 meters with 10 days of skin contact produces something the grape almost never shows: genuine grip, copper-pink color, and a mineral drive that cuts through the bubbles. The grapefruit pith, rhubarb, and faint smoke make it more interesting than almost any other frizzante at this price.

Cantina Furlani's Macerato Frizzante is 100% Pinot Grigio from high-altitude parcels above the village of Povo, directly above Trento, at 700 to 720 meters elevation. The soils are sasso dolomitico — surface clay over schist and broken granite — which deliver the pronounced mineral edge this wine carries from start to finish. Vines are trained in the traditional pergola trentina system and farmed biodynamically without any synthetic inputs.

After harvest, the grapes spend 10 days on their skins, fermenting spontaneously in stainless steel with no added yeasts or temperature control. The fermented wine is racked into demijohns and left outside through winter, using cold temperatures to naturally clarify it. In spring, frozen must from harvest is added back to trigger re-fermentation in the bottle, the classic ancestral method approach used across Furlani's frizzante lineup.

The wine is bottled under crown cap with no disgorgement and no filtration. No sulfur is added. The result is a hazy, soft-pink, lightly sparkling wine at 11.5% ABV — the skin contact pulls out pink-copper color and a gentle tannic grip from the Pinot Grigio skins, distinguishing it from any conventional expression of the grape.

Drink cold and soon. This is not a wine to cellar — it is alive, effervescent, and built for immediate pleasure.

Pour alongside fried fish, anchovies on toast, or a plate of alpine cured meats. The acidity and light tannin also work well with fresh goat cheese or a simple arugula salad dressed with lemon. Avoid heavily sauced or fatty dishes — this wine is built for clean, lighter flavors.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Furlani

Cantina Furlani is a small family operation in Vigolo Vattaro on the Vigolana Plateau, in the province of Trento. Matteo Furlani is a fourth-generation winegrower who took over the family parcels with his wife Annalisa in the early 2000s. His father Fabio continues to work alongside him. The estate spans roughly 3 hectares of vines scattered in small parcels surrounding the village of Povo, directly above Trento, at elevations between 700 and 720 meters in the Dolomites.

No synthetic chemicals have ever been used on the Furlani family's vines. Matteo studied agronomy and has since formalized the farming under biodynamic principles, incorporating biodynamic preparations into vineyard work. Vines are trained in the traditional pergola trentina system, which promotes airflow and even sun exposure across the canopy. Soils are classified as sasso dolomitico — surface clay over schist and broken granite — which contribute to the mineral profile across all of Furlani's wines. The estate also grows cherries and apples on the same steep slopes.

In the cellar, fermentations happen spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks or small glass demijohns, without temperature control. For clarification, wines are racked into demijohns and placed outside in winter snow to settle naturally. Racking decisions follow lunar cycles. The frizzante wines use a variation of the ancestral method: primary fermentation is completed in stainless steel, then frozen must from harvest is added in spring to trigger in-bottle re-fermentation. Wines are bottled under crown cap without disgorgement, filtration, or added sulfur. The Macerato is produced with 10 days of skin contact before pressing and fermentation.

Wine region

Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy

Trentino-Alto Adige is Italy's northernmost wine region, bordering Austria to the north, Lombardy to the west, and Veneto to the southeast. The region is divided into two autonomous provinces: Italian-speaking Trentino in the south, centered on the city of Trento, and the predominantly German-speaking Alto Adige (Südtirol) in the north. The Adige River bisects the region, and nearly all vineyards sit along the valley slopes and tributary hillsides. Elevation ranges widely, with most vineyard sites falling between 200 and 900 meters above sea level. The climate is alpine-continental — summer temperatures can climb above 30°C in the valleys, while cold nights preserve acidity, and the Dolomites act as a rain shadow that limits precipitation on the valley floor.

Trentino-Alto Adige holds nine DOCs and no DOCGs, with DOC wines accounting for approximately 84% of production — the highest DOC share of any Italian region. Key appellations include Trentino DOC (a broad catch-all for varietal whites and reds), Trento DOC (for metodo classico sparkling wines from Chardonnay, Pinot Nero, Pinot Bianco, and Meunier), and Teroldego Rotaliano DOC. Native red varieties Teroldego and Marzemino, and whites including Nosiola and Müller-Thurgau, sit alongside widespread plantings of international varieties. Pinot Grigio accounts for more than 24% of Trentino's total production, though at high altitude and in the hands of small growers it can perform far beyond its commodity reputation.
