Orange Wine

Orange wine is white wine made like red: white grapes fermented on their skins until they turn amber, with the tannin and grip you would expect from a red.

Instead of pressing the juice off the grapes right away, the winemaker leaves it on the skins for days, weeks, or months. That skin contact pulls out color, aroma, and structure, which is how a white grape ends up amber and savory in the glass.

The style is old. It traces back thousands of years to Georgia, where grapes still ferment in buried clay qvevri, and natural winemakers in Friuli and Slovenia revived it in the 1990s. Our collection runs across Georgia, Friuli, Slovenia, Alsace, Austria, and California, so you can taste how much the place and the grape change the result.

There is a wide spectrum here. Lightly tinted skin-contact wines drink like a textured white. Deeply macerated ambers are tannic and complex, closer to a light red, and they reward food and a little air. Ribolla Gialla, Rkatsiteli, Pinot Gris, and Gewurztraminer all show up, each one different on the skins.

Serve orange wine cool but not cold, around 55°F, in a normal wine glass. It is one of the most food-friendly styles you can pour, holding up to spice, fermented and funky flavors, and hard cheese. New to it? Start light, then work toward the tannic end.

If applicable, please consider delivering the package to a business address to ensure someone is available to sign for the package.

We also have the option of delivering the package to a Carrier's store for pickup. Please reach out to us to coordinate.

Carrier will try to delivery a package up to three times before returning the package to us.

See here our shipping policy.

If you miss a delivery and a package gets returned to us we have two options:

1) Reship the package right away: due to the very high cost of shipping and returns, we must charge a re-shipping fee to be determined based on package size and shipping destination.

2) Consolidate the returned package with your next order: this option is free of charge and it's the most popular option.

Orange wine is white wine made like red wine. Instead of pressing the juice off the grapes right away, the winemaker leaves the white grape skins and seeds in contact with the juice as it ferments. That contact draws out color, aroma and tannin, giving the wine its amber tone and textured feel. You will also see it called skin-contact wine or skin-macerated white.

Not by definition, but the two overlap closely. Skin contact gives the juice natural protection while it ferments, so orange wine is often made with minimal intervention and little or no added sulfites. Every orange wine in this collection comes from a natural grower working with as little intervention as possible in the cellar.

Expect more structure than a typical white. Common notes include dried apricot, orange peel, honey, hazelnut and black tea, framed by a savory, gently tannic grip. The style ranges from light and floral to deep and powerful, depending on the grape and how long the juice spent on its skins.

White grapes are fermented on their skins and seeds, sometimes for a few days, sometimes for several months. The longer the maceration, the deeper the color and the firmer the tannin. Many producers ferment in neutral vessels such as clay amphorae or qvevri, a technique that traces back thousands of years to the country of Georgia.

Serve it cooler than red but warmer than a crisp white, around 54 to 57°F. Use a larger glass and give it a few minutes of air, since most orange wines open up and soften as they breathe. Many taste even better on the second day.

Its tannin and savory edge make it one of the most food-friendly styles you can pour. It stands up to bold, spiced and umami-rich cooking: think curry, charcuterie, aged cheese, roast chicken and fermented dishes.
