Tasting notes

This is skin-contact wine without aggression: the Malvasia di Candia Aromatica gives it an aromatic lift of orange blossom and citrus peel, while the Ortrugo keeps the acidity bright and the finish clean. At 11.5% ABV with 15-day maceration, it sits in that rare zone where tannic grip and floral delicacy coexist.

Vino di Fognano is a skin-contact orange wine made by Paolo Foppiani at his family estate in the locality of Fognano, near Bobbio in the Val Trebbia, Colli Piacentini. The Foppiani family has farmed this land for approximately 150 years. Vineyards sit at 300 to 400 meters elevation on calcareous soils and are certified organic by ICEA.

The wine is a blend of Malvasia di Candia Aromatica and Ortrugo, two indigenous varieties of the Colli Piacentini. Malvasia di Candia Aromatica contributes thick skins, pronounced aromatics, and structural depth suited to extended maceration. Ortrugo adds citrus-driven acidity and the local character that grounds the wine in this specific valley.

Grapes are macerated on the skins for approximately 15 days, then aged for 8 months in stainless steel. The wine is bottled unfiltered with minimal added sulfites. Fermentation relies on indigenous yeasts with no other additions in the cellar.

Giulio Armani, the long-time winemaker at La Stoppa and founder of Denavolo, serves as enological consultant to Paolo Foppiani. His involvement brings decades of experience in spontaneous fermentation and extended skin-contact winemaking to the Fognano cellar.

Works well alongside cured meats, egg-based pasta, and aged cow's milk cheeses common to Emilia-Romagna. The wine's acidity and light tannins also cut through fried foods and soft-ripened cheeses. Try it with tagliatelle in a light cream sauce or a board of local salumi.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Agricola Foppiani

Azienda Agricola Foppiani is the family estate of Paolo Foppiani, situated in the hamlet of Fognano near Bobbio in the Val Trebbia. The Foppiani family has farmed this land for approximately 150 years. The total property spans 110 hectares, with 3 to 7 hectares under vine depending on the source, planted on calcareous soils at 300 to 400 meters elevation. The estate holds organic certification from ICEA.

Paolo Foppiani produces natural wines at Fognano with the guidance of Giulio Armani, who serves as enological consultant. Armani has been the winemaker at La Stoppa, the well-known natural wine estate in the Piacenza hills, since 1980. In 2005, he founded his own label, Denavolo, on a hillside in the commune of Travo in the same Val Trebbia. His work at both estates centers on indigenous yeasts, extended skin contact, and zero or minimal sulfite additions.

In the cellar at Fognano, grapes are macerated on the skins for approximately 15 days, fermented with indigenous yeasts, and aged for 8 months in stainless steel. The wine is bottled unfiltered. Winemaking follows Armani's approach at Denavolo: no fining agents, no temperature-controlled fermentation additions, and minimal intervention throughout.

Wine region

Emilia-Romagna, Italy

The Colli Piacentini DOC covers the hills of the Province of Piacenza at the western end of Emilia-Romagna, spanning four main valleys: Val Tidone, Val Trebbia, Val Nure, and Val d'Arda. Vineyards run from roughly 150 to 450 meters above sea level on predominantly calcareous and clay-limestone soils. The region received its DOC designation in 1967 and has a viticultural record stretching back to at least Roman times, with fossilized vine roots and grape seeds found in the area dating to 2000 BC.

The Val Trebbia sub-zone, where the Fognano estate sits, falls under the Trebbianino Val Trebbia DOC for conventionally produced wines, though producers like Armani and Foppiani bottle under Vino da Tavola to preserve complete freedom in the cellar. The key indigenous white grapes here are Ortrugo and Malvasia di Candia Aromatica. Ortrugo, the signature variety of the sub-zone, is valued for its naturally high acidity and aromas of white flowers and stone fruit. Malvasia di Candia Aromatica is the most widely planted DOC grape in the Colli Piacentini overall, known for its complex aromatic profile and thick skins that make it particularly well suited to skin-contact winemaking.
