Tasting notes

Pinot Grigio's naturally pink-grey skins give this wine a copper-salmon hue and a tactile, saline texture that flat, stainless-fermented versions never achieve. Three days on skins pulls blood orange, anise, and dried-flower aromatics without overwhelming tannin — enough structure to stand up to food, enough freshness to drink on its own.

Quinto Quarto Pinot Grigio Sivi is a ramato-style skin-contact wine from Franco Terpin's estate in San Floriano del Collio, a village on the Italian-Slovenian border in the Collio DOC. The grapes come from a single vineyard on Monte Calvario at approximately 150 meters above sea level, planted on ponca soils — Eocene-era flysch of stratified calcareous marl and sandstone formed from an ancient seabed. That geology, combined with the diurnal swings and airflow from both the Julian Alps and the Adriatic, underpins the wine's saline minerality and persistent acidity.

Pinot Grigio has pink-grey skins, and three days of maceration on those skins is enough to pull copper-to-salmon color and textural grip from the grape without pushing the wine into heavy, tannic territory. Fermentation is spontaneous using indigenous yeasts. The wine ages in stainless steel, then is bottled unfined and unfiltered. The result sits stylistically between a structured white and a light orange wine.

On the nose, macerated blood orange, citrus peel, dried flowers, anise, and a thread of acacia honey. The palate is dry and enveloping, with good body, lively acidity, and a light but present tannic texture that makes it genuinely food-friendly. This is the entry-level wine in Terpin's lineup — approachable now, but with enough structure to hold for a few years.

The light tannic grip and saline minerality make this a natural match for seafood — grilled branzino, sauteed clams, or shrimp with olive oil and lemon. It also works well alongside salumi, aged sheep's milk cheese, or a simple plate of prosciutto and melon. If you want to stay local to Friuli, try it with frico, the region's crispy fried cheese and potato dish.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Franco Terpin

Franco Terpin grew up in San Floriano del Collio, in a farming family that has worked this border territory for generations. He founded the estate with his wife in 1994, focusing entirely on wines from his own grapes. Today the estate spans approximately 10 to 12 hectares, with vineyards on both the Italian and Slovenian sides of the border, including a site on Monte Calvario near the Isonzo River. He works alongside his wife Daniela and daughters Sara and Valentina.

The vineyards are farmed organically and biodynamically, without synthetic chemicals. Soils are the local ponca — calcareous marl and sandstone flysch — at elevations ranging from 120 to 320 meters above sea level, with southwest-facing exposures and a planting density of around 5,000 vines per hectare. Grape varieties include Pinot Grigio, Ribolla Gialla, Friulano (labeled Jakot, the grape's name reversed in local defiance of EU naming rules), Chardonnay, Malvasia Istriana, and Merlot.

Winemaking follows minimal-intervention principles. Grapes are hand-harvested, fermentation starts spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, and maceration times vary by wine from a few days to about a week. Wines are aged in a combination of large wooden barrels and stainless steel tanks. Nothing is fined or filtered, and sulfite additions are minimal to none. Total production is approximately 30,000 to 35,000 bottles annually. The Quinto Quarto line is Terpin's more approachable tier, designed to be drunk younger than his single-varietal extended-maceration wines.

Wine region

Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy

Collio DOC is a crescent-shaped appellation of roughly 1,300 vineyard hectares in the province of Gorizia, in the far northeastern corner of Italy. It is bordered by the Judrio River to the west, the Isonzo River to the east, and Slovenia to the north. The region's geology is defined by ponca, the local Friulian name for Eocene-era flysch — stratified layers of calcareous marl and sandstone that originated as an ancient seabed and were later uplifted into hills. Ponca drains well, has low organic fertility, and is rich in calcium carbonate, which limits yields and contributes saline minerality and acidity to the wines grown on it.

Collio's climate sits at the intersection of cool Alpine air from the north and warm, humid influence from the Adriatic to the south. The Julian Alps act as a windbreak against cold northern weather, while Adriatic breezes keep humidity in check during the growing season. Large diurnal temperature swings preserve acidity in the grapes. The appellation is known primarily for white wines — Pinot Grigio, Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Malvasia Istriana, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Bianco are all planted here. Collio is also one of the historic centers of skin-contact and ramato-style Pinot Grigio production in Italy, associated with producers including Franco Terpin, Josko Gravner, and Stanko Radikon.
