Tasting notes

Nine months on skins from 40-to-50-year-old Tuscan vines produces a wine with genuine tannic structure, not just color: dried apricot and candied orange on the nose, then citrus acidity and a tobacco-laced finish that lingers. It drinks more like an aged white with grip than a novelty orange wine, and the zero-sulfite winemaking keeps everything alive and precise.

Sine Felle Ambrato is a skin-contact white wine made from a field blend of Malvasia Bianca Toscana, Trebbiano, and Vermentino grown on 40-to-50-year-old vines in the hills of Scandicci, just outside Florence. The vineyard sits at approximately 120 meters elevation on soils of clay, loam, and sand in roughly equal proportions, with northeast and southeast exposures. Roberto Moretti and Lucia Mori farm the estate biodynamically using only small amounts of copper and sulfur, no herbicides, no pesticides, and no chemical fertilizers.

The winemaking here is the defining act: grapes are hand-harvested into small crates, then macerated on their skins for approximately 9 months with daily punchdowns and pump-overs to extract color and texture. Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts only. The wine is then aged in old oak and stainless steel, bottled without fining or filtration, and contains less than 10 mg/L of sulfites with none added. It is suitable for vegans.

In the glass, Ambrato pours a deep golden amber. The nose opens on dried apricot, honey, candied orange peel, and hay, with ginger and bergamot adding lift. The palate is substantial, with a tannic grip that is firm but not aggressive, lively citrus-driven acidity, and a long finish that turns toward tobacco and rhubarb. The 9-month maceration gives this wine a structure closer to a medium-bodied red than a conventional white.

The name Sine Felle comes from a late-16th-century ex libris bookplate discovered in the foundations of the cellar during renovation. In Latin it means "without bitterness" — a phrase first recorded in the writings of the Roman physician Cornelius Celsus. Podere Casaccia is a member of Vinnatur. The wine is classified as IGT Toscana Bianco, as its unconventional production method falls outside any stricter appellation rules.

The tannin and acidity make this a natural match for strongly flavored fish such as grilled tuna or mackerel, as well as aged and blue-veined cheeses. It holds up well alongside bold Asian flavors like miso-glazed dishes or slow-cooked pork with soy and ginger. Avoid delicate preparations: this wine wants food with weight and savory intensity.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

Producer profile

Podere Casaccia

Roberto Moretti purchased the Podere Casaccia farm in Scandicci in 1999. He was later joined by his wife Lucia Mori, and the two have run the estate together since. The property covers approximately 12 hectares divided between vineyards, olive groves, and woodland, situated a few kilometers from Florence. Moretti is referred to within Italian natural wine circles as 'Il Dottore,' reflecting his background before turning to viticulture.

From the outset, Moretti embraced biodynamic viticulture, applying biodynamic preparations, sowing cover crops for green manuring, and hand-pruning every vine individually. No herbicides, pesticides, or chemical fertilizers are used. The estate's vines average 40 to 50 years of age, with some plots reaching 55 to 60 years, composed of old clones of native Tuscan varieties: Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Malvasia Bianca, Malvasia Nera, Trebbiano, and more recently recovered varieties such as Pugnitello and Foglia Tonda. Podere Casaccia is a member of Vinnatur and farms biodynamically, though without formal Demeter certification.

All grapes are hand-harvested into small crates. Fermentation is spontaneous with indigenous yeasts only. In the cellar, the approach is minimal intervention: no fining, no filtration, and no added sulfites across the entire range. Wines are aged in a combination of old oak and stainless steel. The name 'Sine Felle' derives from a late-16th-century ex libris bookplate uncovered in the cellar foundations during renovation. The phrase, first found in the writings of the Roman physician Cornelius Celsus, translates as 'without bitterness' and appears on every label the estate produces.

Wine region

Tuscany, Italy

Scandicci sits on the hills west of Florence in the province of Florence, within the Chianti Colli Fiorentino production zone. The area's soils are a mixture of clay, loam, and sand, similar in composition to those found across the broader Florentine hills. Elevations in the area typically range from 120 to around 160 meters, with southeast-facing vineyard exposures that provide long hours of sunlight and good phenolic ripening. The climate is continental Tuscan: warm, dry summers with cool nights and moderate winter rainfall.

Tuscany encompasses 11 DOCGs, 41 DOCs, and 6 IGTs. Wines that fall outside standard appellation rules for grapes or winemaking technique — including most skin-contact whites — are labeled as IGT Toscana, the broadest and most permissive regional designation, established in 1992. The dominant red grape across the region is Sangiovese, but native white varieties including Malvasia Bianca Toscana and Trebbiano Toscano have deep roots in the Florentine hills and were historically co-fermented with red grapes in traditional field blends. Vermentino, though more commonly associated with coastal Tuscany and Sardinia, also appears in some Florentine hillside plantings.
