California Natural Wine

California is our home base, and the new-wave growers here, in Sonoma, Mendocino, Santa Barbara, and the Sierra Foothills, have turned away from the ripe, oaky style that once defined Napa toward freshness and restraint.

Read more about California natural wine

For years California meant big, high-alcohol wines built on new oak and very ripe fruit. A younger generation of winemakers has pushed in the opposite direction: picking earlier, fermenting with native yeast and whole clusters, using older barrels, and adding little in the cellar. The result is lighter, fresher, lower-alcohol wine that shows off California's soils and microclimates rather than covering them up.

The best of it comes from cooler and higher sites. Sonoma and Mendocino's Anderson Valley for whites and Pinot, Santa Barbara for cool-climate reds, and the Sierra Foothills for old-vine field blends of Zinfandel, Carignan, and mixed varieties. You will also find Gamay, Trousseau, Chenin Blanc, and plenty of skin-contact experimentation.

Many of these growers work with dry-farmed old vines and organic fruit, part of the broader US natural wine movement. Carrying California natural wine is something we take personally, and this collection is where we show it off.

It is generally lighter, fresher, and lower in alcohol, with far less new oak. Where classic Napa aims for power and ripeness, California natural wine picks earlier and intervenes less, aiming to show the site rather than the winemaking.

Mostly in cooler and higher-elevation areas: Sonoma, Mendocino and its Anderson Valley, Santa Barbara, and the Sierra Foothills. These sites keep acidity fresh and alcohol moderate, which suits the natural style.

A wide range: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Gamay, Trousseau, and Chenin Blanc, plus old-vine Zinfandel and Carignan. Many wines are field blends from historic vineyards planted with several varieties together.

They are wines from historic vineyards, often in the Sierra Foothills or Mendocino, where many grape varieties were planted together decades ago. The grapes are picked and fermented as one, giving complex, characterful wines rooted in old vines.

Most starts from organic or dry-farmed vineyards, even where the wine is not formally certified. The emphasis is on healthy old vines and clean farming, followed by minimal intervention in the cellar.

Usually, compared with the classic Napa style. Earlier picking and cooler sites keep alcohol more moderate, though it varies by producer and vintage. The overall aim is balance and freshness rather than power.
