La Staffa

Colle Stefano is a winery located in the Marche region of Central Italy, specifically in the Verdicchio di Matelica DOC area. Established with a commitment to organic farming, Colle Stefano has been producing high-quality wines since 1995. The winery is situated at an elevation of 420 meters above sea level, benefiting from the unique microclimate of the Esino Valley, which lies between the Apennine Mountains and the Adriatic Sea. Colle Stefano's vineyards are planted on north-facing slopes with clay-limestone soils, partly of volcanic origin. This terroir is ideal for cultivating Verdicchio, the primary grape variety in their wines. The combination of altitude, soil composition, and exposure contributes to the distinct mineral character and vibrant acidity that define Colle Stefano's wines. Fabio Marchionni, the owner and winemaker, emphasizes minimal intervention in the vineyard and the cellar. The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully sorted to ensure only the best fruit is used. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures to preserve the natural aromas and flavors of the grapes. The wines do not undergo malolactic fermentation, maintaining their crispness and freshness. Colle Stefano is best known for its Verdicchio di Matelica, a wine showcasing the Verdicchio grape's purity and elegance. It features aromatic citrus notes, green apples, and floral hints, with a palate marked by bright acidity and a subtle mineral finish. The winery also produces limited red wine from organically farmed Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. Colle Stefano's dedication to sustainable practices and high-quality winemaking has earned it a strong reputation among wine enthusiasts and critics. Their wines are celebrated for their authenticity, reflecting the unique terroir of the Matelica region and the meticulous care taken in their production.
