Tasting notes

The 2019 Classe shows the full, vivid side of Languedoc fruit — dark plum, blueberry, lavender, and garrigue — without losing the lift and freshness that comes from Jeff's no-sulfur, native-yeast approach. It is the kind of wine that drinks easily but rewards attention, with real terroir character from old-vine Grenache and Syrah on Puimisson's clay-limestone soils.

Touch of Class (Classe) is a red blend from Jean-François "Jeff" Coutelou of Mas Coutelou, made from organically farmed Grenache, Syrah, and Carignan grown around the village of Puimisson in the Hérault department of Languedoc, Southern France. The 2019 vintage produced fruit that is full, deep, and vivid. Vinification follows Jeff's minimal-intervention approach: native yeast fermentation, no added sulfur, no fining, no filtration.

The vineyards sit on red clay and limestone soils in and around Puimisson, roughly midway between Béziers and the Mediterranean coast. The estate has been certified organic since 1987, one of the first in the Hérault to receive that distinction. Jeff farms 13 hectares by hand and has planted olive trees and hedgerows throughout the property to support biodiversity and buffer against neighboring conventional farms.

In the cellar, Jeff adapts his approach vintage by vintage — maceration length, destemming, and vessel choices vary by grape and growing season rather than following a fixed formula. The result is a wine that reflects the specific character of the year. The 2019 is drinking with depth and energy, carrying the signature garrigue and dark fruit character of the Languedoc alongside the freshness Jeff's farming consistently delivers.

Drink this with roasted lamb, duck confit, or a slow-cooked beef stew with herbs. The wine's Mediterranean character also works well alongside hard sheep's milk cheeses and charcuterie. Its freshness and moderate tannin make it flexible enough for mushroom-based dishes too.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Mas Coutelou

Mas Coutelou is a family domaine in Puimisson, a village in the Hérault department of Languedoc, roughly 15 kilometers north of Béziers. The estate has been in the Coutelou family for four generations, with a winemaking history on the property stretching back over 300 years. Jean-François 'Jeff' Coutelou took over management of the domaine in 1987 and immediately converted to organic farming — at the time, one of only a handful of growers in the entire Hérault to do so.

In 1987, when Jeff converted, the estate had 20 hectares under conventional cultivation. He reduced that to 13 hectares, removing vines that had been compromised by synthetic inputs and replacing some plots with olive trees and native hedgerows to rebuild biodiversity and buffer the remaining vineyards from neighboring conventional farms. The soils across the estate are primarily red clay over limestone. All vineyard work is done by hand. Jeff grows a wide range of indigenous southern French varieties including Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, and a collection of rare, near-extinct local varieties such as Ribeyrenc, Terret, and Morastel.

In the cellar, Jeff uses native yeasts exclusively, adds no sulfur, no enzymes, and no commercial yeasts. Wines are bottled without fining or filtration. Winemaking decisions — maceration length, destemming or whole-cluster, vessel type — are made vintage by vintage based on what the grapes require rather than a fixed protocol. The estate's cuvée lineup shifts from year to year accordingly. Mas Coutelou wines are certified organic and vegan.

Wine region

Languedoc, France

Languedoc stretches across the southern coast of France from the Rhône delta west toward the Pyrenees, covering the départements of Hérault, Aude, and Gard. Puimisson sits in the Hérault, between Béziers and Montpellier, in the heart of the region's flatlands close to the Mediterranean. The climate is classically Mediterranean: hot, dry summers with low rainfall, mild winters, and persistent winds including the Tramontane that reduce disease pressure and help maintain vine health. Soils in the Hérault are varied, with red clays and limestone dominating much of the area around Puimisson.

Mas Coutelou's wines fall under the IGP Pays d'Hérault designation, which allows the estate to work with a broad range of indigenous southern French grape varieties outside the stricter rules of the AOC system. The Languedoc is France's leading organic wine-producing region, accounting for 36 percent of all certified organic French wine. Dominant red varieties across the region include Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Mourvèdre, and Cinsault, often blended to balance fruit weight, structure, and aromatics. The garrigue landscape — low-lying limestone scrubland covered in wild herbs including thyme, rosemary, and lavender — is a defining feature of the terroir and a recognizable signature in many Languedoc reds.
