Tasting notes

Paltières comes from a single limestone parcel with vines going back to 1927, and that old-vine depth shows even at 12.5% ABV — the fruit is crunchy and precise, with a herbal lift and long finish that belie how easy it is to drink. Whole-bunch carbonic maceration and zero sulfur additions keep it vivid and unadorned.

Paltières is a single-plot Gamay from Raphaël Beysang and Émélie Hurtubise, based in Saint-Germain-Nuelles in the far south of Beaujolais. The parcel sits on almost pure limestone, with two sections of vines: one planted around 1927 and another from the early 1990s. The 2022 vintage is labeled Vin de France.

Grapes are hand-harvested in small baskets and undergo whole-bunch carbonic maceration for approximately two weeks using spontaneous fermentation. No sulfites are added at any stage. The wine is bottled unfiltered and unfined, in 1-liter format.

The 2022 shows fresh, crunchy red fruit — small red berries, a note of blackcurrant and blueberry, and a faint herbal lift. Tannins are fine and present without being grippy. The finish is long given the lightness of the frame.

In the vineyard, Raphaël and Émélie use horse plowing for soil work, apply only small amounts of copper and volcanic sulfur as treatments, and supplement with biodynamic plant preparations including nettle and comfrey infusions. No synthetic herbicides or fungicides are used.

Serve alongside charcuterie, a simple roast chicken, or a tomato-based pasta where the wine's bright acidity and red fruit character can mirror the dish. It also works well with light mushroom preparations or a fresh chevre. At 1 liter and 12.5% ABV, it is practical at the table from start to finish.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Rapahel Beysang

Raphaël Beysang is from Châtenois, Alsace, the son of hotel and restaurant owners. He studied viticulture in Obernai before working with Patrick Meyer in Nothalten, where he was introduced to natural wine farming. He subsequently worked with Jean-Marc Dreyer before moving to Auvergne, where he spent time with Vincent Marie (No Control) and Patrick Bouju (Domaine de la Bohème). It was at Bouju's cellar that he met Émélie Hurtubise, who is originally from Quebec and had followed Bouju's partner Justine Loiseau from Japan to Auvergne for her own internship.

Raphaël moved to Saint-Germain-Nuelles in 2017, the first vintage of the domaine, and Émélie joined in 2018. Their estate, GAEC Lapins des Vignes, farms approximately 7 hectares of Gamay across varied parcels in the southern Beaujolais. Soils across the estate include limestone, clay, granite, and blue stone. The Paltières parcel is a single site on near-pure limestone.

Vineyard work is done by horse for soil tillage. Treatments are limited to small quantities of copper and volcanic sulfur applied by hand sprayer, supplemented with biodynamic plant infusions — nettle, comfrey, horsetail, and willow decoction. No synthetic herbicides or fungicides are used. In the cellar, no sulfur dioxide is added at any stage. Wines are neither fined nor filtered and are bottled in 1-liter or magnum formats, predominantly in recycled bottles.

Wine region

Beaujolais, France

Beaujolais stretches from just north of Lyon to the south of Mâcon, covering roughly 13,500 hectares planted almost entirely to Gamay. The region divides broadly into two zones: the south, where soils tend toward clay and limestone and the landscape rolls in gentle hills, and the north, where granite and schist dominate and the ten Cru appellations are located. Saint-Germain-Nuelles, where Raphaël and Émélie farm, sits in the far south, closer to Lyon than to Mâcon, on limestone-dominant soils characteristic of that zone.

Beaujolais holds 12 AOCs in total: the regional Beaujolais AOC, Beaujolais-Villages (covering 38 communes), and the ten Crus — Brouilly, Côte de Brouilly, Régnié, Morgon, Chiroubles, Fleurie, Moulin-à-Vent, Chénas, Juliénas, and Saint-Amour. The region was designated a UNESCO Geopark in recognition of its geological complexity, with over 300 distinct soil profiles identified across the appellation. Gamay noir à jus blanc accounts for 97% of plantings across all Beaujolais appellations.
