Tasting notes

Pale gold in the glass, with a classic dry Riesling nose of tart green apple, pear, lime granita, and a hint of petrol. The palate is racy and mouthwatering, with pronounced minerality from Eichberg's limestone and clay terroir and a long, saline finish.

Kuentz-Bas Riesling Grand Cru "Eichberg" 2022 is a dry, terroir-driven Alsatian Riesling from the historic Maison Kuentz-Bas, founded by the Kuentz family in 1795 and based in Husseren-les-Châteaux. The Eichberg Grand Cru faces south-east at 220 to 340 meters of altitude on the edge of Eguisheim, sheltered by the foothills of the Vosges with a particularly dry and warm microclimate, on soils of limestone conglomerate and Oligocene marl with siliceous, clayey, stone-rich colluvium. Kuentz-Bas has officially received the organic certification for the 2007 vintage and the biodynamic certification (Demeter) for the 2008 vintage. This bottling belongs to the Trois Châteaux range, which highlights the domaine's finest grand cru sites.

Pair with shellfish, oysters, and grilled fish, where the wine's bright acidity acts as a perfect palate cleanser. It also stands up to richer Alsatian classics like choucroute garnie, roast pork, and washed-rind cheeses such as Munster.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Kuentz-Bas

Maison Kuentz-Bas was first established by the Kuentz family in 1795, and the domaine as we know it today was forged through a marriage that joined the Kuentz and Bas families in 1895. Nestled in the town of Husseren-les-Châteaux, it sits at one of the highest points in Alsace, and the vineyards stretch out from the village, with more than two hundred years of tradition and the grand crus of Eichberg and Pfersigberg earning the highest esteem. The family sold the property to vigneron Jean-Baptiste Adam in 2004, the fourteenth generation to continue a family winemaking tradition that began as early as 1614.

Kuentz-Bas has officially received the organic certification for the 2007 vintage and the biodynamic certification (Demeter) for the 2008 vintage. The estate owns 10 hectares of vineyards that are certified biodynamic and 6 hectares are organic, with vines aged 25 to 45 years, and total production comes from 30 hectares on the steep slopes in and around Husseren-les-Châteaux with all grapes hand-harvested.

Winemaker Olivier Raffin, who took over direction of the cellar after Samuel Tottoli's departure in 2017, divides the wines into two tiers: Tradition, fermented and aged on the lees in oak foudre for 6 to 8 months, and Trois Châteaux, from the domaine's finest vineyards, which are fermented and aged in stainless steel tank, then bottled and held for a year before release. Raffin embraces hard work in the vineyards and minimal work in the cellar, with reduced doses of sulfur and a drier fermentation that yields crisp, mineral-laden wines with less residual sugar.

Wine region

Alsace, France

Alsace sits in northeast France along the German border, where the Vosges Mountains shelter the vineyards from prevailing westerly weather. The prevailing westerly winds lose their moisture on the western slopes of the Vosges and reach Alsace in the form of foehn winds, dry and warm, so precipitation is particularly low and the climate is much drier and slightly warmer than would be expected at this latitude. The climate is continental and dry with warm springs, dry and sunny summers, long autumns and cold winters.

Alsace Grand Cru Eichberg is a French white wine produced in the Haut-Rhin department, located six kilometres southwest of Colmar between Pfersigberg to the north and Hatschbourg to the south, and is one of the fifty-one grands crus of the Alsace region. Its soil and climate quality are perfectly suited for Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Alsace Pinot Gris.
