Tasting notes

A century-old Carignan vineyard in Madera County producing a pet nat with no additions whatsoever — just dry-farmed old vine grapes and native fermentation. Carignan at this vine age delivers concentrated red fruit with natural zesty acidity and a hint of violet, qualities that make it a natural fit for the ancestral method.

Kerfufle Pet Nat is made from 100% Carignan grown in Madera County, California, from a single vineyard planted in 1915. At over 100 years old, the vines are dry-farmed and head trained, meaning no irrigation and no trellising support — the old bush vines regulate their own yields. Carignan from ancient California plantings is known for vivid color, lively acidity, and expressive red fruit character, all of which translate naturally into the pet nat format.

Pet nat, short for pétillant naturel, is made by the méthode ancestrale: the wine is bottled while primary fermentation is still active, trapping CO2 as fermentation finishes in the bottle. The result is gentle, low-pressure carbonation with fine, somewhat frothy bubbles — less uniform than traditional method sparkling but more expressive of the raw fruit. This bottle carries no added sulfites, no fining, no filtering.

Winemaker Noel Diaz runs Purity Wine out of a warehouse cooperative in Richmond, CA, where roughly 14 natural winemakers share space and equipment. His label philosophy is full transparency: the back label lists every ingredient used in production. For Kerfufle, the ingredient list is one item: grapes. All fruit sourced for Purity is grown organically, a standard Diaz committed to from 2016 onward.

The acidity and fine bubbles work well against fatty charcuterie, salumi, and aged sheep's milk cheese. Try it with grilled sardines or light tomato-based pasta where the wine's red fruit and bright acidity can hold their own. It also works as a standalone aperitif, especially slightly chilled around 48-52F.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Purity Wine

Noel Diaz founded Purity Wine in 2013 after nearly 20 years working in restaurants, moving through front-of-house roles before becoming a wine buyer. His path into winemaking accelerated after completing the WSET Level 3 course, which he has described as a pivotal turning point. He started his brand at a facility on Treasure Island before relocating to a warehouse space at 1401 Marina Way South in Richmond, CA, where he established a collective of natural winemakers — roughly 14 producers sharing the space.

From 2016 onward, all fruit sourced by Purity Wine is grown organically. Diaz has also taken on vineyard leases in Calaveras, Mendocino, and Contra Costa Counties. He practices regenerative farming principles including no-till and biodiversity management. His stated goal is minimal intervention: native yeast fermentation, no fining or filtering, and rare to no sulfur additions. Every bottle carries a back label listing all production inputs — a transparency standard he holds himself to regardless of what was or was not added.

Diaz does not make every wine every year; production decisions are based on how the fruit looks at harvest rather than a fixed lineup. Purity wines have been poured at international natural wine fairs including RAW and Brumaire. In 2018, Diaz converted the front office of the Richmond warehouse into a wine bar called The Study, open to the neighborhood as both a tasting room and a community space.

Wine region

California, USA

Madera County sits in California's San Joaquin Valley, roughly 30 miles north of Fresno. The Madera AVA, established in 1984, covers well-drained, non-alkali soils watered by rivers descending from the Sierra Nevada. Annual rainfall averages only 11 to 12 inches, and the growing season runs 260 to 270 days, making this one of California's warmest and driest grape-growing zones. Heat accumulation averages around 4,259 degree days — a climate traditionally suited to high-yield production and fortified wines.

European immigrants, primarily from Italy, Armenia, and France, planted the first vines in Madera in the 1870s, making it one of California's oldest viticultural areas. The region is historically known for port-style and dessert wines made from Muscat and Portuguese varieties. Old-vine field plantings from the late 19th and early 20th century, including head-trained Carignan blocks, survive across the county, and these ancient dry-farmed vines are increasingly sought by natural winemakers for their concentrated, naturally balanced fruit.
