Product description

Gut Oggau Maskerade Rosé 2024 is a biodynamic field blend rosé from Burgenland, Austria, produced by Eduard and Stephanie Tscheppe. This wine combines Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt from recently acquired vineyards near Lake Neusiedl, planted in gravel and limestone soils. The Maskerade series represents vineyards still revealing their character—wines "hiding behind masks" until they mature into the estate's fictional family. Gut Oggau Maskerade Rosé 2024 undergoes spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts in neutral oak barrels. Bottled with minimal intervention, it is unfined, unfiltered, and contains low sulfites.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Gut Oggau

Eduard Tscheppe and Stephanie Tscheppe-Eselböck founded Gut Oggau in 2007, reviving a 17th-century winery that had sat abandoned for two decades in the village of Oggau. Eduard brought winemaking experience from working with his father in Styria; Stephanie contributed a culinary sensibility developed through her family's ownership of Taubenkobel, a Michelin-starred restaurant in Burgenland. They met at a Vienna wine fair in 2005.

The estate's prolonged neglect proved advantageous: chemical residues had cleared from the soils, allowing immediate conversion to biodynamic practices. Gut Oggau now holds full Demeter certification across roughly 25 hectares. The couple also restored a 200-year-old vertical screw press, which remains in use for select cuvées.

What distinguishes Gut Oggau is its fictional family concept. Each vineyard possesses a distinct personality, which Eduard and Stephanie chose to express through characters illustrated by artist Jung von Matt. The children—Theodora, Atanasius, Winifred—represent younger vines yielding lighter, energetic wines. The parents—Joschuari, Emmeram, Timotheus, Josephine—come from warmer sites producing fuller-bodied cuvées. The grandparents—Mechthild, Bertholdi—derive from the oldest vines and traditional methods, including the antique press.

The Maskerade series exists outside this family structure. These wines come from recently acquired vineyards still developing their identity. As the estate explains, these plots are "still hiding their true self"—only after fully revealing their character will they join the family. Until then, they remain masked. The Maskerade wines offer an accessible entry point to Gut Oggau's distinctive approach, bottled in 1-liter format with crown cap closures. Annual production across all wines totals approximately 40,000 bottles.

Wine region

Burgenland, Austria

Burgenland occupies Austria's eastern edge, where the country meets Hungary across the Pannonian Plain. Covering approximately 32,200 acres of vineyards, it stands as Austria's second-largest and warmest wine region. Lake Neusiedl (Neusiedler See), Europe's largest steppe lake, shapes the viticultural character of the surrounding area. Its shallow, warm waters moderate temperature extremes and generate humidity that influences growing conditions throughout the season.

The Neusiedlersee zone wraps around the lake and includes the village of Oggau on the western shore. Here, gravel and limestone soils predominate, offering natural drainage while imparting mineral character to wines. The Pannonian climate brings warm continental conditions—hot summers balanced by cool Alpine breezes descending from the west. This interplay extends the growing season and helps grapes retain acidity despite generous warmth.

Burgenland divides into four DAC (Districtus Austriae Controllatus) zones. Neusiedlersee encompasses the lake and its famous botrytized dessert wines. Leithaberg in the north showcases mineral-driven whites and reds from ancient soils. Mittelburgenland centers on red wine production, particularly the region's signature Blaufränkisch. Eisenberg in the southeast yields structured, iron-tinged reds.

Red varieties dominate Burgenland's plantings: Blaufränkisch (the regional flagship), Zweigelt (Austria's most planted red), and St. Laurent thrive in the warm climate. These grapes produce rosés with structure and depth uncommon in cooler regions. The natural wine movement has taken strong root here, with estates practicing biodynamic and organic viticulture gaining international recognition. Producers like Gut Oggau, Claus Preisinger, and Meinklang have established Burgenland as a destination for minimal intervention winemaking alongside its traditional strengths.
