Product description

Gut Oggau Winifred Rosé 2024 is a biodynamic rosé from Austria's Burgenland region, produced by Eduard and Stephanie Tscheppe at their restored 17th-century estate near Lake Neusiedl. This wine blends Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt from 35-year-old vines grown on gravel and limestone soils. Crucially, the Winifred vineyard is dedicated exclusively to rosé production—no saignée from red wine. Gut Oggau Winifred Rosé 2024 is hand-harvested, destemmed, and fermented spontaneously with native yeasts in used 500, 1000, and 1500-liter oak barrels. Aging lasts approximately 8 months before bottling unfined, unfiltered, and without added sulfur.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Gut Oggau

Gut Oggau occupies a restored 17th-century winery in the small village of Oggau, overlooking Lake Neusiedl in Austria's Burgenland. Eduard Tscheppe and Stephanie Tscheppe-Eselböck founded the estate in 2007 after discovering the abandoned property. Eduard came from a conventional winemaking family in Styria; Stephanie's family owned Taubenkobel, a Michelin-starred restaurant in Burgenland. They met at a wine fair in Vienna in 2005.

The estate's 20-year period of neglect before their arrival proved advantageous: all chemical residues had washed from the soils, allowing immediate conversion to biodynamic farming without a transition period. Today, Gut Oggau holds full Demeter certification across approximately 25 hectares. The couple restored everything meticulously, including a 200-year-old vertical screw press still used for certain wines.

Working in the cellar, Eduard and Stephanie observed that wines from different parcels possessed distinct personalities. Rather than homogenize these differences, they chose to celebrate them by creating a fictional family. Each wine bears a portrait drawn by artist Jung von Matt and a name representing its character. The children—Theodora, Atanasius, Winifred—come from younger vines on gravel and limestone, yielding lighter, more energetic wines. The parents—Joschuari, Emmeram, Timotheus, Josephine—derive from warmer sites with greater sun exposure. The grandparents—Mechthild, Bertholdi—represent the oldest vines, producing the estate's most structured cuvées.

Winifred holds a special position: she's the youngest in the family, and her dedicated vineyard produces only rosé—never saignée from red wine production. This commitment to rosé as a serious category, not a byproduct, distinguishes Winifred in the marketplace. With only about 40,000 bottles produced annually across all wines, Gut Oggau remains one of Austria's most sought-after producers.

Wine region

Burgenland, Austria

Burgenland lies along Austria's eastern border with Hungary, part of the Pannonian Plain that extends across Central Europe. This is Austria's warmest wine region and its second-largest, with approximately 32,200 acres under vine. The landscape is dominated by Lake Neusiedl (Neusiedler See), one of Europe's largest steppe lakes, whose shallow waters create humid microclimates and moderate temperature extremes.

The village of Oggau sits on the lake's western shore, historically recognized as one of the first places in Austria to cultivate red grape varieties. Soils here combine gravel and limestone, offering good drainage and mineral content that contribute freshness to wines that might otherwise become overly ripe in such a warm climate. The Pannonian climate—hot continental with influence from both warm Hungarian air and cooler Alpine breezes—extends the growing season while preserving natural acidity.

Burgenland divides into four DAC (Districtus Austriae Controllatus) zones. Neusiedlersee, where Gut Oggau is located, surrounds the lake and produces both dry wines and the botrytized dessert wines for which the region has earned international acclaim. Leithaberg to the north features pronounced minerality from ancient soils. Mittelburgenland to the south has become Austria's premier zone for red wine, particularly Blaufränkisch. Eisenberg in the southeast yields structured, tannic reds from iron-rich terrain.

Natural and biodynamic winemaking has taken strong hold in Burgenland. The region's warm climate and well-drained soils reduce disease pressure, making organic viticulture practical. Producers like Gut Oggau, Claus Preisinger, Meinklang, and Heinrich have established Burgenland as a center for minimal intervention winemaking in Austria. Indigenous varieties—Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt, St. Laurent—dominate alongside international cultivars.
