The Wine: Glou Glou Pinot Noir 2019
Dunites Glou Glou Pinot Noir is a limited release red natural wine made from 100% Pinot Noir farmed biodynamically on the San Luis Obispo Coast, California. Half of the blend is Pinot from Bassi Vineyard, which is only 1.5 miles from the ocean on ancient sandstone soils. This portion was fermented with 1/3 whole cluster and gentle extraction. The remaining half of the blend is Pinot from the Demeter certified Chene Vineyard in Edna Valley. This fruit was picked at low Brix and was whole-bunch pressed before fermentation in neutral oak barrels (essentially made as a white wine) and contributes a delicate texture with cranberry/floral aromas.
The Producer: Dunites
Dunites was founded in 2015 by Tyler and Rachel Eck to highlight the unique vineyards of the SLO Coast. Small lot wines are crafted using old-world techniques to focus on the vineyards, most of which are farmed using biodynamic or organic inputs. The resulting cool-climate wines reflect the diverse soils and maritime influences of their sites. The name is inspired by an eclectic group of 1930s metropolitan refugees known as the Dunites who settled in the beach dunes of San Luis Obispo county to live and express themselves freely outside of the cultural norms of the time.
