Tasting notes

The 18-month lees aging in stainless steel gives this Muskateller a texture you don't expect from the grape, while the orange blossom and sour peach aromatics stay vivid and precise. It is a Demeter-certified biodynamic wine bottled without filtration or added sulfur, from one of Southern Styria's most quietly serious natural producers.

Der Rebenhof's Gelber Muskateller Spätfüllung is 100% Gelber Muskateller (Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains) grown on a single steep slope in Southern Styria, Austria. The vines are 20 to 40 years old and planted on ancient river and lakebed deposits of sandstone, gravel, and calcareous marl, sediments laid down roughly 15 to 17 million years ago when this area was an inland sea. The estate holds Demeter biodynamic certification, farming under those standards since 2010.

Spätfüllung means late bottling. This wine was aged on its fine lees in stainless steel for 18 months before being bottled without filtration and without added sulfur. No enzymes, selected yeasts, sugar, or additives of any kind are used. The result is a wine that carries more texture and roundness than a standard early-release Muskateller, while retaining the grape's signature aromatic lift.

On the nose, orange blossom and ripe stone fruit lead, with a candy-like quality reminiscent of sour peach that is distinctly varietal and immediately recognizable. The extended lees contact adds weight to the mid-palate without dulling the acidity that keeps the wine fresh. Serve well chilled, around 45 to 48 degrees Fahrenheit.

Works well with dishes that have some aromatic complexity: Thai green curry, Vietnamese spring rolls, or steamed fish with ginger and scallion. Also strong with fresh goat cheese, asparagus preparations, and charcuterie boards built around lighter, herbed pork.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Der Rebenhof

Der Rebenhof is located in Ratsch on the South Styrian Wine Road. The estate was purchased in the summer of 1924 by Ludwig Krempl, Hartmut Aubell's great-great-grandfather. Hartmut took over the property on January 1, 2008, and redirected it toward biodynamic farming and natural winemaking. The estate covers 9.5 hectares of extreme slopes and terraces, with the oldest vines dating to the 1940s.

Rebenhof farms biodynamically and has held Demeter certification since 2016, having transitioned to those standards from 2010. The two primary vineyard sites are Witscheiner Herrenberg, with layered sand, gravel, and silt soils, and Ratscher Nussberg, which sits on opok, the same grey calcareous marl found across the border in Collio and Brda. The vineyard rocks date back 15 to 17 million years to ancient marine and lacustrine deposits.

In the cellar, Aubell works with stainless steel tanks and Austrian oak, using native yeasts exclusively and adding nothing to the wines. No fining, no filtration, no added sulfur. Bottling is done on Harti's timeline, when the wine tastes ready, which results in sporadic releases of wines from various aged vintages. The Spätfüllung (late bottling) Gelber Muskateller was aged on its fine lees in stainless steel for 18 months before bottling.

Wine region

Southern Styria, Austria

Südsteiermark sits along Austria's southern border with Slovenia and is the country's southernmost wine-growing zone. The climate is classified as Illyrian, a convergence of Mediterranean warmth from the south and continental influences from the north and east. Rainfall is roughly twice that of Burgenland, contributing to the region's intense greenery and long growing season. Cool nights during autumn slow ripening and allow aromatic compounds to develop with precision. Vineyards on higher slopes reach up to 550 meters above sea level.

The dominant soils in Südsteiermark are opok, a dense, striated calcareous marl of fine clay, silt, and sand formed from ancient sea deposits roughly 15 to 18 million years old. In areas closer to the Slovenian border, alluvial river and lakebed deposits of sandstone, gravel, and silt add further variation. The Südsteiermark DAC designation was formally established in 2018 and organizes wines into three tiers: regional, village, and single-vineyard. Gelber Muskateller is recognized as a leading variety for the Leutschach and Gamlitz subzones. Sauvignon Blanc is the region's most planted and most internationally recognized grape.
