Tasting notes

This is Loire Cab Franc at its most direct: raspberry and black fruit up front, undercut by earthy, almost vegetable-garden notes and a tobacco-tinged finish. The 14-day maceration and old-barrel aging give it texture without weight, and the acidity keeps everything lively through the last sip.

Beau Gosse is 100% Cabernet Franc sourced from Domaine de Pintray, an organically farmed estate in Lussault-sur-Loire, Touraine. The grapes were hand-harvested, destemmed by hand, and underwent a 14-day maceration in tank with gentle punch-downs done by hand and foot at the start of fermentation.

After pressing, the wine was transferred to old barrels for 10 months of elevage. No filtration. Indigenous yeast only. A small dose of sulfur may be added before bottling solely for stability during transport, per Lisanne van Son's stated practice across all Sonshine wines.

Winemaker Lisanne van Son is a Dutch-born former sommelier who relocated to Touraine in 2017 and completed her winemaking diploma in Amboise. She vinifies out of a troglodyte cave in Noizay, sourcing only organically or biodynamically grown fruit from partner growers. The 2018 vintage was her first full production year, yielding six wines total.

Expect a dry, mid-weight red with bright red fruit, earthy undertones, and the herbal lift typical of Loire Cab Franc. Light tannins, lively acidity, and a long finish. Can be served slightly cool.

Works well with herb-roasted chicken, duck rillettes, or a simple lentil salad with smoked sausage. The herbal edge of the Cabernet Franc makes it a natural with green-olive tapenades and charcuterie boards. Serve at 58-62F for best results.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Sonshine Vins

Lisanne van Son is a Dutch-born sommelier who worked in restaurants in the Netherlands, Belgium, and the UK before pivoting to winemaking. In 2013 she came to Montlouis-sur-Loire and worked in the vineyard and cellar with Noella Morantin, later gaining additional experience with Bertrand Jousset and Tony Bainbridge in Anjou. In March 2017 she relocated permanently to Touraine, completed a viticulture diploma in Amboise, and launched Sonshine Vins.

Sonshine Vins operates as a negociant out of a troglodyte cave in Noizay, a village just outside Amboise. Lisanne sources exclusively from organic or biodynamically farmed growers. The Cabernet Franc for Beau Gosse comes from Domaine de Pintray in Lussault-sur-Loire, an estate that has farmed organically since 2015. All grapes are hand-harvested by Lisanne and her team.

In the cellar, Sonshine wines are made with indigenous yeast and without additives, aside from a minimal sulfur addition before bottling when needed for stability. Beau Gosse is hand-destemmed, macerated for 14 days in tank, and aged for 10 months in old barrels before bottling unfiltered. In 2021, Lisanne and her partner Edouard Gouyette established Domaine des Sonnettes, their own 4-hectare estate in Jujurieux in the Bugey region, where Sonshine wines are now produced.

Wine region

Loire Valley, France

Touraine is the broad AOC centered on the city of Tours in the Middle Loire, covering roughly 5,300 hectares across Indre-et-Loire, Indre, and Loir-et-Cher. The climate is temperate, with Atlantic oceanic influence from the west shifting toward a more continental character as you move east. The region sits at the junction of these two climatic zones, giving the wines a characteristic freshness alongside adequate ripeness.

Soils across Touraine vary considerably: the most prized sites sit on tuffeau, a soft porous limestone formed during the Turonian period of the Cretaceous (roughly 90 million years ago), with other parcels on flinty clay locally called perruches, and sandy or alluvial river gravels closer to the Loire. Cabernet Franc is the dominant red variety, producing wines with red berry fruit, herbal character, and firm but fine acidity. The troglodyte caves carved into tuffeau hillsides serve both as wine cellars and as the literal walls of historic chateaux across the region.
