Tasting notes

This is a wine built for immediacy: dark fruit notes of black cherry, blueberry, and blackcurrant with a touch of earthy funk and high-toned acidity that keeps every sip lively. At 12.5% ABV with silky, approachable tannins, it drinks more like a very serious glou-glou than a simple everyday red.

Youngster Red is Milan Nestarec's Beaujolais Nouveau-style release: a snapshot of the new vintage bottled just after fermentation ends. The 2021 is a blend of Zweigelt, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Dornfelder grown on estate vineyards in Moravský Žižkov and Velké Bílovice, in the Slovácká sub-region of southern Moravia. Soils are primarily loess and clay with some sandy plots, and vines were around 19 years old at harvest.

The grapes are hand-harvested and destemmed, then fermented in 2000-liter stainless steel tanks using indigenous yeast, with occasional pigeage over approximately two months. Elevage continues in the same tanks for another two months. The wine is bottled unfiltered, unfined, and with zero sulfur added.

The vineyards have been farmed organically since 2008 and Milan has progressively adopted biodynamic practices, working toward increased biodiversity in the field. No synthetic chemicals are used in the vineyard or cellar.

Youngster Red is meant to be drunk young and chilled, with the kind of direct, unvarnished fruit you only get from a wine that has spent just a few months in tank before bottling.

Serve slightly chilled alongside charcuterie boards, grilled sausages, or lentil dishes. The wine's acidity and dark fruit also work well with braised red cabbage or mushroom-based pastas. Keep pairings simple and unfussy to match the wine's direct character.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Milan Nestarec

Milan Nestarec is the second-generation winemaker at a family estate based in Velké Bílovice, Moravia. The family's involvement in viticulture began with a small plot returned to them as restitution in the early 1990s, and the winery went commercial in 2001 when Milan's father planted 8 hectares across Moravský Žižkov and Velké Bílovice. Milan took over all winemaking responsibility at age 16. The estate has since grown to 24 hectares of estate-owned vineyards.

The vineyards have been farmed organically since 2008, with no synthetic herbicides or pesticides. Milan has progressively moved toward biodynamic practices, citing biodiversity as a driver of more complex and stable wines. Named vineyards include Slovenské in Moravský Žižkov and Zadní hora in Velké Bílovice. Soils across the estate include loess, clay, sand, and in some plots heavier blue clay. Milan is a member of the Autentiste charter, which unites Czech and Slovak winemakers committed to environmentally responsible production.

In the cellar, Milan uses spontaneous fermentation exclusively. Vessels range from 2000-liter stainless steel tanks to 400-600 liter oak and acacia barrels of varying ages. He does not rack wines off their lees during elevage, and all wines are bottled without fining or filtration. Sulfur additions were dropped completely in 2014. Milan studied winemaking with Aleš Kristančič of Movia in Slovenia, and exports approximately 95% of his production internationally.

Wine region

Moravia, Czech Republic

Moravia, in the southeastern Czech Republic near the borders of Austria and Slovakia, accounts for over 90% of the country's vineyard area. The region has a continental climate with warm summers, significant diurnal temperature variation, and cool autumns that preserve acidity in the grapes. Moravský Žižkov and Velké Bílovice both fall within the Slovácká sub-region, characterized by loess, clay, and sandy soils and a mix of white and red varietals.

Moravia is divided into four wine sub-regions: Znojemská, Mikulovská, Velkopavlovická, and Slovácká. Slovácká features diverse soils ranging from lighter sandy plots at lower elevations to heavier clay-rich soils in hillier terrain. The dominant red grapes across Moravia are Blaufränkisch (Frankovka), Zweigelt, and Saint Laurent, while white production is led by Grüner Veltliner, Welschriesling, Riesling, and Müller-Thurgau. In recent years, producers like Milan Nestarec have drawn international attention to Moravia's potential for low-intervention, terroir-expressive wine.
