Tasting notes

This is a red pét-nat built on obscure Catalan varieties most producers abandoned decades ago — Sumoll, Garrut, Queixal de Llop — vinified together in a single co-ferment that produces a hazy, raspberry-bright sparkler with serious acidity and barely-there tannins. It drinks more like chilled Beaujolais with bubbles than any Cava you have had, and at 12% ABV it disappears from the glass faster than you expect.

The VN Vinel-lo Ancestral is a naturally sparkling red pét-nat from Partida Creus, made by the ancestral method from a co-fermented field blend of seven indigenous red varieties: Garnacha Tinta, Sumoll, Garrut, Queixal de Llop, Carignan (Samsó), Ull de Perdiu, and Trepat. The vineyards sit on clay-limestone soils in the Massís de Bonastre, Baix Penedès, at 150 to 200 meters elevation, roughly 5 kilometers from the Mediterranean coast. All fruit is farmed organically and harvested by hand.

Grapes macerate whole-cluster, and the musts from each variety are added to the tank one after another, extending the total fermentation window. Fermentation is completed in bottle using indigenous yeasts, where the wine rests on its fine lees for a minimum of 10 months. No sulfur is added at any stage. The wine is not fined or filtered, and carries no vintage designation.

In the glass it shows a hazy, translucent raspberry-red with fine, persistent bubbles. The nose leads with fresh red fruit: raspberry, wild strawberry, and a hint of cranberry, followed by light floral and yeast notes. On the palate it is dry, light-bodied, and high in acidity, with the carbonation amplifying the wine's natural freshness. Tannins are present but soft.

Vinel-lo, or vinello in Italian, translates loosely to everyday wine — a low-alcohol, light table wine style. The name reflects exactly what Massimo Marchiori and Antonella Gerosa are after with this cuvée: something approachable, lively, and built for the table rather than the cellar.

Works well with charcuterie, pa amb tomàquet, grilled sardines, and fried anchovies. The high acidity and light body handle fatty or salty foods cleanly. Serve slightly cool, around 50 to 55°F, and treat it like you would a chilled light red.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Partida Creus

Partida Creus was founded by Antonella Gerosa and Massimo Marchiori, Italian architects originally from Piedmont, who moved to Barcelona in the late 1990s and later settled in Bonastre, in the Baix Penedès, around 2005. The name refers to the stone crosses historically used to mark the boundaries between vineyard holdings. At their property, El Maiol, they discovered an abandoned vine that turned out to be Sumoll — once among the most widely planted varieties in the area before growers replaced it with international varieties. That discovery set the direction for the entire project.

The first vintage was 2007. The estate covers 22 hectares, with 6 planted to vines, situated at 150 to 200 meters altitude and approximately 5 kilometers from the Mediterranean. All farming is organic, with no synthetic treatments, and vineyard rows are kept narrow to prevent mechanical intervention. Beyond their estate, Massimo and Antonella work with local farmers to lease or acquire old-vine plots of indigenous varieties including Vinyater, Cartoixa Vermell, Garrut, Trepat, and Bobal. They produce over 100,000 bottles annually across a wide range of cuvées, each identified by a two-letter code.

The winemaking philosophy at Partida Creus is zero-zero: indigenous yeasts only, no additions of any kind, no fining, no filtration, and no added sulfur at any stage. The cellar is an industrial warehouse in Bonastre that was renovated using recycled materials. For the VN Ancestral, grapes are harvested by hand, macerated whole-cluster, and the musts from each variety are added sequentially to extend the fermentation. The wine finishes fermentation in bottle and rests on its lees for a minimum of 10 months before release.

Wine region

Penedès, Spain

Penedès is a DO located in Catalunya, northeast Spain, spanning coastal plains and inland hills between Barcelona and Tarragona. The region divides into three sub-zones by altitude: Baix Penedès, the warmest and lowest-lying zone near the coast; Mitja Penedès at 250 to 500 meters, the heart of Cava production; and Alt Penedès reaching up to 800 meters, where cooler temperatures favor aromatic whites. Soils across the region are predominantly clay-limestone, sand, and Miocene sedimentary deposits, well-drained and low in organic matter. The climate is Mediterranean with hot, dry summers and mild winters, moderated along the coast by sea breezes.

Penedès is best known internationally as the birthplace of Cava, Spain's bottle-fermented sparkling wine, centered on the town of Sant Sadurní d'Anoia. The three core Cava white varieties — Xarel-lo, Macabeo, and Parellada — dominate plantings. Baix Penedès, where Partida Creus farms, is the southernmost and warmest sub-zone, historically associated with fuller-bodied reds from indigenous Mediterranean varieties including Garnacha, Sumoll, Garrut, Trepat, and Carignan. As of the 2025 harvest, Penedès became the first wine appellation in the world with 100% certified organic production.
