Tasting notes

Subirat Parent is one of the rarest surviving grapes in Catalonia, and Partida Creus produces it with zero additions — no sulfur, no filtration — which lets its natural salinity and citrus-blossom aromatics come through cleanly. At 9.6% ABV it has a cut-glass precision that is hard to find at any price.

SP Sub Par is a 100% Subirat Parent (also called Malvasia de Sitges) from a single old-vine parcel in the Baix Penedès. Subirat Parent is an ancient Catalan variety within the broader Malvasia family, historically grown around Sitges and the Massís del Garraf on calcareous clay soils. The vines are approximately 70 years old and farmed organically. The grape is naturally low-yielding, late-budding, and highly aromatic.

In the cellar, Partida Creus keeps intervention to a minimum. Grapes are harvested by hand, pressed whole-cluster with stems, then fermented spontaneously in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts. The wine rests on fine lees for at least three months before bottling with no fining, no filtration, and zero added SO2.

The 2020 comes in at approximately 9.6% ABV, making it one of the lightest wines in the Partida Creus lineup. The palate is dry, bright, and direct: citrus peel, orange blossom, ripe pear, and a streak of lean salinity through the finish. There is no oak contact at any stage.

The name SP is shorthand for Subirat Parent, with Sub Par as the affectionate nickname for the variety. Partida Creus has played a key role in preserving this near-forgotten grape, sourcing it outside the DO Penedès framework, which is why it is labeled under the broader Catalunya appellation.

Works well with briny, light-textured foods: oysters, clams, grilled sardines, or a simple plate of anchovies with bread. The wine's salinity and acidity also make it a strong match for fresh goat cheese or a light vegetable ceviche.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Partida Creus

Partida Creus was started around 2001 by Massimo Marchiori and Antonella Gerosa, both architects originally from Piedmont, Italy. After working in Barcelona, they relocated to the rural village of Bonastre in the Baix Penedès, where they found a property at El Maiol and began farming fruit and vegetables. When they could not find local wines that met their standards, they began making their own. The name Partida Creus refers to the stone crosses historically used to separate land holdings in the area.

Their vineyards are concentrated in the Massís de Bonastre, where soils are calcareous clay. They have progressively acquired or leased abandoned parcels planted with old, low-yielding indigenous Catalan varieties — Sumoll, Garrut, Trepat, Cartoixà Vermell, Bobal, Subirat Parent, and others — that neighboring growers considered commercially obsolete. All fruit is hand-harvested. Farming follows biodynamic and organic principles. Massimo and Antonella stopped adding sulfur entirely in 2013.

In the cellar, fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts throughout. Wines are not fined or filtered, and no sulfur is added at any stage. Fermentation typically takes place in stainless steel tanks, though some single-varietal cuvées have seen aging in oak or acacia barrels in more recent vintages. The SP Subirat Parent is fermented and aged entirely in stainless steel, resting on fine lees for at least three months before bottling. Partida Creus produces over 100,000 bottles per year across a wide range of single-varietal wines, making them one of the larger natural wine producers in Catalonia.

Wine region

Penedès, Spain

Penedès is a DO located in Catalonia in northeastern Spain, spanning coastal lowlands near Tarragona in the south through inland hills that reach up to 800 meters above sea level near the Anoia highlands. The DO encompasses 66 municipalities and is divided into three main subzones: Baix Penedès along the warm coastal belt, Penedès Central at mid-elevations, and Alt Penedès at the highest, coolest inland terrain. Soils are predominantly calcareous clay, sand, and limestone of Miocene origin, with poor organic matter content and good natural drainage. The climate is broadly Mediterranean, with hot dry summers and moderate rainfall concentrated in spring and autumn, though maritime breezes along the Garraf coast and altitude-driven diurnal variation in Alt Penedès create meaningful site-to-site differences.

Penedès is best known internationally as the heartland of Cava production, centered on Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, and as of the 2025 harvest it became the first wine appellation in the world with 100% certified organic production. The primary white varieties authorized in the DO include Xarel·lo, Macabeo, Parellada, Subirat Parent, and Malvasia de Sitges. Indigenous reds include Ull de Llebre (Tempranillo), Garnacha Negra, Sumoll, and Samsó. Partida Creus, based in the village of Bonastre in the Baix Penedès within the Massís de Bonastre, works outside the DO for many of its wines — labeling under the broader Catalunya appellation — because the indigenous varieties it sources, including Subirat Parent from the Massís del Garraf, often fall outside the DO's regulated framework.
