Tasting notes

Four weeks of maceration on limestone and basalt-grown Merlot, Cabernet, and Barbera pulls out a wine that is simultaneously fruity and savory, with crushed cherry and plum up front and a distinct salty, herbal edge underneath. Zero added sulfites and foot-pressed fruit from 40-year-old vines in a park most wine drinkers have never heard of.

Sotto la Pelle is a red wine from Vigna Flor, a small estate in the Colli Euganei natural park near Padova, Veneto. The blend of Merlot, Cabernet, and Barbera comes from two vineyards in the Cinto Euganeo area: one hectare on the terraced, calcareous sedimentary slopes of Monte Gemola, and two hectares in a small valley between Monte Cinto and Monte Partizzon. Vines average around 40 years of age.

In the vineyard, Davide Boldrin and Francesca Gozzo practice organic and biodynamically inspired farming guided by principles of synergistic and regenerative agriculture. All grapes are hand destemmed and foot pressed. Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts in fiberglass and stainless steel vessels. The wine receives approximately four weeks of maceration with regular punch-downs, is racked once or twice, then bottled unfined and unfiltered with no added sulfites. Total sulfites measure 19 mg/L.

The name translates as "under the skin" and the wine reflects that idea: the structure and savory character are just beneath a surface of ripe red fruit. Dry, with residual sugar under 1 g/L. Suitable for vegans and vegetarians.

The savory, briny edge on this wine makes it a natural match for mushroom pasta, braised pork, or wild boar ragu. It also works well alongside aged Asiago or other firm northern Italian cheeses. Serve slightly cool, around 60-62F, to keep the fruit fresh.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Vigna Flor

Vigna Flor was founded in 2019 by Davide Boldrin and Francesca Gozzo, who spent roughly 15 years operating a restaurant and natural wine shop in Monselice, in the southeastern corner of the Colli Euganei park. That period gave them direct exposure to natural wine producers and informed the direction of their own project. Before starting Vigna Flor, Davide worked at Farnea in close contact with Marco Buratti, one of the most respected natural winemakers in Veneto. They also apprenticed at I Castagnucoli, where producer Nicola offered them cellar space to make their first vintage. The estate name combines 'Vigna' (vineyard) with 'Flor', the name of their daughter.

Vigna Flor farms two vineyards near Cinto Euganeo, totaling approximately three hectares. The first, around one hectare, is rented and terraced on calcareous sedimentary soil on the southern slope of Monte Gemola. The second, purchased in 2020, covers two hectares in a small valley between Monte Cinto and Monte Partizzon in Cinto Euganeo. Both vineyards are planted with vines averaging around 40 years of age. Farming follows organic and biodynamically inspired practices informed by permaculture and principles of synergistic and regenerative agriculture. No synthetic additives are used at any stage. The winery is located in Monselice.

All grapes are hand destemmed and pressed by foot. Fermentation is spontaneous using native yeasts, carried out in fiberglass and stainless steel vessels. Reds receive approximately four weeks of maceration with regular punch-downs. The wines are racked once or twice before bottling and any aging takes place in the same tanks used for fermentation. No fining, no filtration, and no added sulfites at any stage. Total SO2 is 19 mg/L. The wines are suitable for vegans and vegetarians.

Wine region

Veneto, Italy

The Colli Euganei are a cluster of roughly 100 volcanic hills rising up to 600 meters above the flat Po Valley plain southwest of Padova. The hills were formed by a series of eruptions beginning approximately 43 million years ago, producing hard volcanic rocks including basalt, trachyte, and latite. The soils are a mix of volcanic basalt in the central zones and calcareous sedimentary limestone and clay on the slopes, giving producers access to meaningfully different terroir within a compact area. The climate is near-Mediterranean, with dry, warm summers and cooling overnight temperature swings that preserve acidity and aromatic freshness. Since July 2024, the Euganean Hills have held UNESCO MAB Biosphere Reserve designation.

The Colli Euganei DOC was established in 1969 and covers a wide range of styles including red, white, and sparkling wines. The Fior d'Arancio sweet Muscat wine was elevated to its own DOCG in 2010. Bordeaux varieties, particularly Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Carmenere, have a long and significant presence here and thrive in the mineral-rich volcanic soils. Vineyards are planted between 50 and nearly 400 meters above sea level, primarily on south-facing slopes. The region sits within the larger Veneto wine region, which is Italy's highest-volume producing region and home to Prosecco, Soave, and Amarone della Valpolicella DOCs.
