Tasting notes

At 11.5% ABV with zero added sulfur, Rossofongoli delivers crunchy red cherry and plum fruit with a smoky mineral edge and herbal lift that makes it unusually versatile at the table. The 10-day maceration keeps tannins soft while preserving the bright acidity that defines Umbrian Sangiovese at this elevation.

Rossofongoli is a 60% Sangiovese and 40% Montepulciano blend from Fongoli's estate in the Montefalco area of Umbria, bottled as an Umbria IGT. The grapes are grown on clay-limestone soils high in active limestone, with vines planted in 1993 at 300–450 meters elevation. No synthetic chemicals are used in the vineyard; farming follows biodynamic principles certified by Ecocert since 2011.

Harvest is done by hand in September. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in open-top stainless steel tanks without temperature control. The must macerates on the skins for approximately 10 days with manual pump-overs three times daily, followed by soft pressing with a horizontal membrane press. The wine is then racked in stainless steel and bottled in spring after harvest without fining, filtration, or addition of sulfur dioxide.

The result is a ruby red wine, clear and bright, with a fruity and lightly earthy bouquet. It sits at 11.5% ABV, making it a lighter, freshly structured red with vibrant acidity. Three months of bottle aging round out the wine before release.

Works well with tomato-based pasta, pizza, braised white meats, and red-sauce dishes. The soft tannins and bright acidity also make it a good match for charcuterie boards or fried foods. Serve slightly cool, around 58–62°F.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Fongoli

Angelo Fongoli is the fourth generation of the Fongoli family to make wine at the estate, located in the Montefalco area of Umbria. Until the 1980s the estate was a mixed-use conventional farm; in the early 2010s Angelo redirected it toward biodynamic viticulture and a more diverse polyculture approach. The estate totals approximately 35–40 hectares encompassing vineyards, olive groves, woodland, arable land, and a natural truffle ground.

The vines have been certified organic by Ecocert since 2011 and the estate has practiced biodynamics since 2010. Farming relies exclusively on copper, sulfur, and biodynamic preparations for disease defense. Green manure with legumes, grains, and other nitrogen-rich plants is used to build humus and improve soil structure. Farm animals including horses, goats, and cows graze the olive groves and contribute to biodiversity. Roughly 20 hectares are planted to traditional regional varieties: Trebbiano Spoletino, Grechetto, Sangiovese, Montepulciano, and Sagrantino, the oldest of which are over 40 years old.

All wines are produced from estate-grown grapes only. Winemaking for Rossofongoli involves spontaneous fermentation in open-top stainless steel with no temperature control, manual pump-overs, and a maceration of approximately 10 days. The wine is aged in stainless steel, then bottled in spring without fining, filtration, or added sulfur dioxide, followed by three months of bottle aging before release.

Wine region

Umbria, Italy

Umbria is Italy's only landlocked region with neither a coastline nor an international border, situated in the center of the peninsula bordered by Tuscany to the north, Le Marche to the east, and Lazio to the west. The region is predominantly hilly and mountainous, and the climate is Mediterranean-continental: cold, wet winters and warm, dry summers with meaningful diurnal temperature swings at higher elevations that preserve acidity and aromatics in the grapes.

The soils around Montefalco are predominantly clay-limestone of lacustrine origin, derived from the ancient Lake Tiberino, and are notably high in active limestone. Umbria holds two DOCG designations — Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG and Torgiano Rosso Riserva DOCG — along with 13 DOCs and 6 IGTs. Sangiovese is the most widely planted red variety in the region, accounting for roughly 22% of vineyard area, while Sagrantino is the prestige native red concentrated around Montefalco at approximately 470 meters elevation.
