Tasting notes

A short 4-day maceration keeps this Sangiovese nimble and bright, with tart cherry and orange peel up front and a pomegranate snap on the finish. The fiberglass aging preserves freshness without adding any oak character, letting the fruit and the clay-limestone terroir of Montemelino speak clearly.

Rosso Conestabile is 100% Sangiovese grown on the outskirts of Montemelino, in the province of Perugia, Umbria. The vineyards sit at 250 to 300 meters above sea level on clay soils over a calcareous base, planted in the early 1970s and never treated with chemicals. Lake Trasimeno lies nearby, moderating temperatures and extending the growing season with gentle summer breezes and mild winters.

In the cellar, winemaker Danilo Marcucci keeps intervention to a minimum. The grapes are de-stemmed and macerated on the skins for 4 days before pressing. Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts, no temperature control, and no added sulfur. The wine ages in fiberglass tanks and is bottled without fining or filtration.

The result is a light, fresh Sangiovese that reads more like a cool-climate red than a sun-baked Central Italian one. Expect tart cherry, orange peel, tomato leaf, and a clean pomegranate-edged finish. At 12.5% ABV, it drinks easily and works well slightly chilled.

Pour this alongside charcuterie, roasted chicken with herbs, or a simple tomato-based pasta. The bright acidity and low tannin also make it a reliable match for lentil soups and bean dishes common in Umbrian cooking. Serve at 58 to 62F, or lightly chilled on a warm evening.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Conestabile della Staffa

Conestabile della Staffa is a historic estate located on the outskirts of Montemelino in the province of Perugia. The property traces its origins to two noble Umbrian families: the Conestabile family from Orvieto and the Della Staffa family from Perugia, who united through an arranged marriage in the 1700s. At its peak in the 1800s, the estate spanned over 700 hectares and produced more than 10,000 hectoliters of wine annually, making it the most prominent winery in the Trasimeno-Perugino area. Wine production ceased in 1956, and from that point until 2015 the grapes were sold to a local cooperative.

Today the estate covers 12 hectares of vines planted in the early 1970s. The land was never treated with synthetic chemicals during the decades it sat largely unattended, which gave Danilo Marcucci a clean slate when he took over winemaking in 2015 after marrying Alessandra Conestabile della Staffa. The vineyards sit at 250 to 300 meters above sea level on clay soils over a calcareous base, close enough to Lake Trasimeno to benefit from its climate-moderating effect. Grapes grown include Sangiovese, Sagrantino, Gamay del Trasimeno, Canaiolo, Colorino, Grechetto, Trebbiano Dorato, and Malvasia.

Marcucci spent over 20 years learning natural winemaking and farming from producers including Lino Maga, Eduardo Valentini, Cappellano, and Vittorio Mattioli before taking the reins at Conestabile. His approach is consistent across all wines: spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, no temperature control, no fining or invasive filtration, and no added sulfur. Aging takes place in fiberglass tanks, which preserve freshness without imparting any additional flavor.

Wine region

Umbria, Italy

Umbria is a landlocked region in central Italy, bordered by Tuscany to the west and the Marche to the east. The terrain is predominantly hilly, with vineyards planted along terraced slopes at varying elevations. The climate is continental, with cold wet winters and hot dry summers, and strong diurnal temperature shifts that help preserve acidity in the grapes. The area around Lake Trasimeno in the northwest corner of the province of Perugia benefits from an additional moderating influence: the lake brings cooler summer temperatures and milder winters compared to the rest of the region.

Umbria holds two DOCGs: Montefalco Sagrantino and Torgiano Rosso Riserva. Key DOC zones include Colli del Trasimeno, Orvieto, Torgiano, Montefalco, and Colli Perugini. The dominant red grape is Sangiovese, grown across most appellations, alongside native varieties such as Sagrantino, Gamay del Trasimeno (genetically identical to Grenache), Ciliegiolo, and Canaiolo. Grechetto and Trebbiano are the principal white grapes. Many producers in the Trasimeno area bottle under the Umbria IGT designation, which allows flexibility with grape varieties and winemaking approaches outside DOC constraints.
