Tasting notes

Two distinct Grenache sites in one rosé: the warmer, alluvial Los Olivos District provides body and ripe citrus character, while Robert Rae Ranch in the cool Sta. Rita Hills adds tension and freshness. The direct-press approach keeps the color pale and the profile dry, with orange peel and grapefruit blossom aromatics that set it apart from the strawberry-forward California rosé template.

Press Gang Cellars Rosé of Grenache 2020 is a blend of 90% Grenache from Brave and Maiden Estate (Los Olivos District AVA) and 10% Grenache from Robert Rae Ranch (Sta. Rita Hills AVA). Brave and Maiden is a Sustainability In Practice-certified estate situated on a broad alluvial terrace in the heart of the Santa Ynez Valley, with uniform soils at elevations between 400 and 1,000 feet. Robert Rae Ranch sits at 800 feet on a north-facing slope at the eastern edge of the Sta. Rita Hills, a 118-acre site that benefits from coastal fog and maritime winds off the Pacific.

Kyle Knapp ferments Press Gang fruit using native yeast and keeps intervention in the cellar to a minimum. The wine is a direct-press rosé, not a saignée, which produces a lighter extraction and a pale pink color. On the nose it leads with orange peel and grapefruit blossom. On the palate it draws comparisons to Provençal rosé in its dry, fresh structure.

Production at Press Gang is genuinely tiny. No single wine in the lineup has exceeded 56 cases. Kyle Knapp runs the label alongside his role as head winemaker at Stolpman Vineyards, sourcing exclusively from like-minded growers across Santa Barbara County. Press Gang was founded in 2010 by Kyle and Savanna Knapp and takes its name from a song by the Murder City Devils.

Serve with grilled whole fish, lemon chicken, or oysters. The dry citrus-driven profile also works well alongside herb-marinated vegetables or goat cheese. Chill to around 48-52F and drink within a year or two of vintage.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Press Gang Cellars

Press Gang Cellars is a husband-and-wife label founded by Kyle and Savanna Knapp in Lompoc, California. Kyle treats 2010 as the label's true starting point, the year he committed full-time to winemaking after earlier harvests at Beckmen Vineyards and a stint in Western Australia. He subsequently worked his way up to head winemaker at Stolpman Vineyards, a position he still holds alongside running Press Gang.

The label sources exclusively from Santa Barbara County growers whose farming aligns with Kyle's minimalist philosophy. Fruit is hand-picked, hand-sorted, and fermented with native yeast. Production across the entire Press Gang lineup is extremely small, with individual wines rarely exceeding 50 cases. The name Press Gang comes from a song by the Murder City Devils, inspired by the British naval practice of forced impressment.

In the cellar, Kyle's approach is low-intervention: native yeast fermentation, minimal additions, and careful attention to what each vineyard delivers. For rosé, he uses direct pressing rather than saignée, producing lighter color and cleaner citrus-driven aromatics. Wines are bottled to reflect the specific vineyards and vintages rather than a house style blended for consistency across years.

Wine region

Santa Barbara County, USA

Santa Barbara County sits along California's Central Coast, defined by a rare east-west mountain range that funnels cold Pacific air directly into its valleys. This orientation gives the region one of the longest growing seasons in California, allowing grapes to develop flavor and acidity simultaneously. The Los Olivos District AVA is a broad, flat alluvial terrace of the Santa Ynez River with elevations from roughly 400 to 1,000 feet, consistent topography, and well-drained soils well suited to Rhône varieties including Grenache.

The Sta. Rita Hills AVA lies at the western, cooler end of the Santa Ynez Valley. The Pacific Ocean's marine layer and afternoon winds traverse the valley between the Purisima Hills and Santa Rosa Hills, keeping temperatures low and growing seasons long. Soils here are calcareous and sandy, high in limestone, producing wines with sharp natural acidity and defined structure. The appellation was established in 2001 and covers roughly 30,720 acres, with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay as its flagship varieties, though Grenache and Syrah also thrive on sites with the right elevation and exposure.
