Tasting notes

The overnight skin maceration pulls a vivid cherry-pink color and a touch of tannic grip from Montepulciano's deeply pigmented skins — something most pale rosés simply do not have. At around 10.5% ABV, it is all fresh strawberry, cranberry, and snappy acidity without any weight, making it one of the more honest and direct rosés we carry.

Rosé Lab is made from 100% Montepulciano grown on a 0.5-hectare plot in Atessa, a town in the Sangro River Valley in the province of Chieti, southern Abruzzo. The vines are 35 years old, planted at roughly 300 meters elevation on clay soils. Total production is around 500 bottles.

Winemaking is straightforward and hands-off: the grapes macerate on their skins overnight, are pressed the following morning, and the juice rests in fiberglass tanks for a few months. No sulfites are added at any stage. The wine is unfined and unfiltered.

The overnight maceration gives the wine a deeper cherry-pink color than most Provence-style rosés. On the palate it is dry, low in alcohol (around 10.5%), and built around fresh red fruit — strawberry, cherry, and cranberry — with bright, lively acidity. Light tannins from the brief skin contact add just enough grip to give the wine some structure.

The LAB label name comes from the initials of Luca's two sons, Lorenzo Amerigo and Leonardo Andrea Bevilacqua. The wines are designed for immediate drinking and sharing rather than cellaring.

The wine's bright acidity and low alcohol make it a natural match for charcuterie, fresh goat cheese, and light pasta dishes. It works well alongside grilled sardines or lean white fish preparations. On a warmer day, serve it with a simple arugula salad with shaved parmigiano and lemon.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Luca Bevilacqua

Luca Bevilacqua is a professional sommelier based in Atessa, a small town in the Val di Sangro area of southern Abruzzo in the province of Chieti. After working as a sommelier across Europe, he returned to his native Abruzzo in 2001 and began making wine from his father's vineyard. He started the LAB project — named for the initials of his two sons, Lorenzo Amerigo and Leonardo Andrea Bevilacqua — with the goal of producing easy-drinking, low-intervention wines from indigenous Abruzzo varieties.

The vineyards are located in Atessa at approximately 300 meters elevation on clay soils. The plots are small — a couple of hectares in total — with the Rosé Lab sourced from a 0.5-hectare parcel of 35-year-old Montepulciano vines. The vineyards have never been treated with synthetic chemicals; only copper is used in small quantities when needed. Total production across all wines is under 10,000 bottles.

Luca's winemaking approach is zero-zero: spontaneous fermentation with no additions, no fining, no filtration, and no added sulfites. The Rosé Lab is made by macerating Montepulciano on its skins overnight, pressing the following morning, and aging the resulting wine in fiberglass tanks for a few months before bottling. Production of the Rosé Lab is around 500 bottles per vintage.

Wine region

Abruzzo, Italy

Abruzzo sits on the central-eastern edge of the Italian peninsula, bordered to the west by the Apennine mountains and to the east by the Adriatic Sea. This geography creates a range of mesoclimates: the coastal strip around Chieti and Pescara is warm and Mediterranean, while inland valleys at higher elevations experience more continental conditions with significant day-to-night temperature swings. Vineyards approved under the main DOC rules must sit below 500 meters elevation, keeping most plantings on the lower-lying hillsides and coastal plains where soils are predominantly clay, limestone, and marl.

Montepulciano is the dominant red grape of Abruzzo, accounting for more than 55% of total vineyard land in the region. It is covered by two overlapping DOC appellations: Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC for red wines, and Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo DOC — established in 2010 — for the rosato style. The province of Chieti produces the largest volume of Montepulciano in the region. White varieties Trebbiano d'Abruzzo and Pecorino are also grown widely, and a number of small producers working outside DOC constraints bottle their wines as Abruzzo IGT, allowing for greater flexibility in winemaking approach.
