Tasting notes

Riesling rarely gets this treatment: extended skin maceration pulls out a waxy, peachy texture that is entirely different from the grape's conventional expression. Bottled in a clay vessel sealed with beeswax, it is one of Slovenia's most distinctive and site-specific orange wines, produced only when Šuman decides the vintage warrants it.

Renzki Rizling is 100% Riesling (Rheinriesling) grown in the Srednje Slovenske Gorice hills of northeastern Slovenia, in the Podravje wine region. Radovan Šuman only produces this wine in select vintages. The grapes undergo extended maceration on skins and seeds before being aged in old Alsatian foudres, then bottled unfined and unfiltered with no added sulfites, sealed with beeswax, and packaged in clay bottles.

Šuman's 8 hectares of vineyards sit in the rolling hills of Štajerska (Slovenian Styria), roughly 30 kilometers from Maribor, at elevations of 250 to 400 meters. Soils here are clay and sandstone over carbonate marl bedrock. The climate draws from three directions: Alpine cooling from the west, Pannonian warmth from the east, and occasional Mediterranean influence from the south, creating significant diurnal swings that preserve acidity.

Radovan has held Demeter biodynamic certification since 2012. He does not plow, does not use sulfur or copper sprays, and instead relies on homemade herbal preparations, a flock of sheep, bees, and resident poultry for vineyard management. Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts. Nothing is added at any stage of production.

The resulting wine shows the golden-amber color typical of extended skin contact on Riesling. Expect aromas of white peach, dried apricot, and beeswax with a thread of citrus and spring blossom. The palate is textured from the maceration, with notable acidity and a savory, slightly tannic finish.

The wine's texture and savory finish work well with cured pork, aged hard cheeses, and roasted root vegetables. Riesling's natural acidity cuts through rich fish dishes like pan-seared trout or salmon with cream sauce. Spiced dishes — Thai, Indian, or Middle Eastern — also balance well against the wine's aromatic intensity and slight tannin grip.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Šuman

Radovan Šuman was born in Slovenian Styria when the region was still part of Yugoslavia. His father, also a winemaker, fell ill when Radovan was around 14 years old, leaving him in de facto control of the family's 300-year-old winery and its four hectares of vines. Those early years were formative: largely self-taught, he developed his approach through direct observation and independent study, including quantum physics, which eventually led him to the writings of Rudolf Steiner.

Today, Radovan and his wife Simona farm 8 hectares of vineyards in Štajerska, in the Srednje Slovenske Gorice hills roughly 30 kilometers from Maribor. He has held Demeter biodynamic certification since 2012. Around a decade ago he eliminated the use of sulfur and copper sprays entirely, relying instead on homemade herbal preparations, a flock of sheep, bees for pollination and beeswax, and resident poultry and birds that feed on insects. He has also ended all plowing to protect soil structure and biodiversity.

All wines at Šuman are fermented spontaneously with native yeasts, macerated on skins, aged in old oak barrels, and bottled unfined and unfiltered with no added sulfites. Several cuvées, including Renzki Rizling, are bottled in clay vessels and sealed with homemade beeswax. Šuman is identified as one of the leading figures in Slovenia's natural and biodynamic wine movement, alongside Bozidar Zorjan and Aci Urbajs in Štajerska.

Wine region

Podravje, Slovenia

Podravje is Slovenia's largest wine region, covering roughly 9,650 hectares in the northeast of the country, divided into two main districts: Štajerska Slovenija and Prekmurje. The region takes its name from the Drava River and centers around the city of Maribor. Nearly 97% of wine produced here is white. Šuman's vineyards sit within Štajerska Slovenija, the larger of the two districts, in the Srednje Slovenske Gorice hills, about 30 kilometers northeast of Maribor. Vineyards in the district are located mostly on rolling hillsides and terraces at 250 to 400 meters elevation.

The climate in Štajerska is continental, shaped by Alpine cooling from the Pohorje Hills to the west and warmth from the Pannonian Plain to the east, with periodic Mediterranean influence from the south. This produces warm summers with significant diurnal temperature variation, preserving acidity in the grapes. Soils in the district range from clay and sandstone to limestone, marl, slate, and volcanic tuff. The most widely planted white varieties are Riesling (Rheinriesling), Welschriesling (Laški Rizling), Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Furmint (Šipon). The region does not yet have a formal DOC-equivalent appellation system; wines are labeled under the Štajerska Slovenija geographic indication within the Podravje PGI.
