Tasting notes

Ralph's Vineyard consistently delivers what most warm-climate Grenache does not: pale color, fine tannins, and a savory mineral backbone driven by the ironstone soils of Clarendon. The anise thread, dry herb notes, and brisk acidity make this feel closer to a serious Burgundy than anything the McLaren Vale region was historically known for.

Ralph's Vineyard is a single block in Clarendon, the elevated southeast corner of McLaren Vale. The vines are dry-grown bush vines on grey sand over ironstone, owned by Ralph Wood and farmed organically by his daughter Fiona Wood. Sitting at around 280 metres, the top of the block receives more residual moisture than the lower Alfred block, which translates to slower ripening, slightly lower alcohol, and a more restrained fruit profile.

The 2018 is 100% Grenache, destemmed and fermented to dry on skins with wild yeasts, then pressed to barrel with no additions of any kind — no sulfur, no fining agents, no filtration. James Erskine has worked this site since Jauma's earliest vintages and has not used sulfur in any wine since 2015. The wine is sealed under crown seal to protect freshness.

In the glass it shows pale ruby with translucent edges. The nose is floral and aromatic — rose petal, cola, dried herbs, dark plum — with a distinct mineral thread from the ironstone-dominant soil. On the palate the wine is light-to-medium bodied with brisk red fruit, fine dusty tannins, and a characteristic anise note that runs through all Ralphs vintages. The finish is dry, savory, and long.

Works well with duck confit or roasted quail where the savory, herbal notes in the wine mirror the fat and gaminess of the bird. Equally good with a cheese board anchored by aged manchego or a semi-hard sheep's milk cheese. The fine tannins and acidity also make it a natural alongside lamb chops with herbs.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Jauma

James Erskine founded Jauma in 2010 after leaving a career as one of Australia's top sommeliers. He was named Australian Sommelier of the Year by Gourmet Traveller in 2009, topped the Australian International Court of Master Sommeliers exams in 2008, and later completed an honours degree in Agricultural Science at the University of Adelaide and UC Davis, specializing in soil chemistry. His first Jauma wines came from McLaren Vale Grenache fruit, and the label has focused on that region ever since.

Erskine sources fruit exclusively from organically farmed vineyards in McLaren Vale and Clarendon, working with viticulturalists Fiona Wood and David Gartlemann who manage the sites he leases. Ralph's Vineyard is owned by Ralph Wood and farmed by his daughter Fiona. The vines are dry-grown bush vines on grey sand over ironstone in Clarendon, with no irrigation since establishment. Jauma is certified organic through NASAA, which also requires the producer to demonstrate social justice practices as a condition of certification.

In the winery, Erskine makes no additions and performs no subtractions — no sulfur since 2015, no fining, no filtration. Fermentation is carried out with wild yeasts. All wines are bottled under crown seal, a format Erskine adopted after encountering it in Japan and finding it superior to cork for preserving freshness and minimizing oxygen uptake in sulfur-free wines. Jauma distributes to more than fifteen export markets and produces around 39,000 bottles annually across its full range.

Wine region

McLaren Vale, Australia

McLaren Vale sits on the Fleurieu Peninsula, 40 kilometres south of Adelaide, bordered by the Gulf St Vincent to the west and the Mount Lofty Ranges to the east and south. The GI was officially recognized in 1997 and covers approximately 7,300 hectares of planted vines. The region operates under a Mediterranean climate — warm, dry summers with most rainfall arriving in winter — which limits disease pressure and supports organic farming. Vineyards range in altitude from near sea level to around 350 metres, with cooling afternoon sea breezes from the Gulf moderating heat during the growing season.

McLaren Vale contains more than 55 distinct geologies, with soil types ranging from red-brown sandy loams and deep white sands to ironstone-rich profiles and ancient limestone. Clarendon, in the elevated southeast of the region, is one of its coolest sub-zones, with sandy soils over ironstone and significant diurnal temperature variation. Grenache has been grown in McLaren Vale since the 19th century, and the region remains phylloxera-free. Shiraz dominates plantings at around 54% of the total area, but Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, and a growing list of Mediterranean varieties including Fiano and Vermentino are well established.
