Tasting notes

This is a textbook example of what dry Alsace Pinot Gris can be at the serious end: full-bodied and almost viscous in texture, with smoked apricot, honey, and a stony mineral streak that keeps it from feeling heavy. Nine months on lees in old foudres adds depth without any obvious oak flavor.

Domaine Gérard Schueller sits in Husseren-les-Châteaux, the highest wine village on the Alsace wine route, a few kilometers southwest of Colmar. The vineyards are planted on limestone-dominant soils with southeast and south-facing exposures, protected from rain and wind by the Vosges mountains. Bruno holds parcels on two Grands Crus — Pfersigberg and Eichberg — as well as the notably mineral Bildstœcklé site, farming all 10 hectares along biodynamic principles without formal certification.

In the cellar, Bruno presses the Pinot Gris grapes whole and ferments with native yeasts. The wine then spends approximately nine months on the lees in large old Alsatian foudres — barrels typically around 1,000 liters, many close to a century old — before being bottled without filtration or added sulfites. No additives are used at any stage.

The result is a dry, full-bodied white with the texture and weight Alsace Pinot Gris is known for: smoked stone fruit, apricot, honey, and a savory mineral undercurrent from the limestone soils. The long lees aging and old wood add richness without obvious oak influence. Acidity is moderate — lower than Bruno's Rieslings — but the wine has enough structure to age.

Bruno Schueller produces up to 40 different cuvées in a given vintage, each reflecting a specific parcel or approach. His Pinot Gris sits at the full-bodied, dry end of his range — expressive and textural, but firmly dry with the mineral backbone that defines this corner of Alsace.

Alsace Pinot Gris at this weight pairs well with foie gras, roasted pork, and washed-rind cheeses — anything rich enough to match the wine's texture. It also works with mushroom-forward dishes like a cream-based risotto or roasted chicken with root vegetables. Avoid delicate preparations; this wine needs food that can hold its own.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Bruno Schueller

Domaine Gérard Schueller was founded by Gérard Schueller in the 1960s in Husseren-les-Châteaux, Alsace. Bruno Schueller joined the domaine in 1982 and has managed it since. The estate farms approximately 10 hectares across multiple parcels, including holdings on the Pfersigberg and Eichberg Grands Crus, as well as the Bildstœcklé site. In 2017, an additional 3 hectares were brought under a separate project called Lucie Colombain.

Bruno farms biodynamically but has not pursued formal certification, choosing to remain outside the constraints of any single framework. He pays close attention to canopy management, timing leaf cover to slow ripening and build depth in the fruit. He uses minimal to zero plowing and avoids sulfur sprays in the vineyard. His stated goal is full, slow ripening as the foundation for wines with genuine depth and longevity.

In the cellar, Bruno uses whole-cluster direct pressing, native yeast fermentation, and extended lees aging in large old Alsatian foudres — typically around 1,000 liters in capacity, many of them close to 100 years old. All wines are bottled without filtration and without added sulfites. He produces as many as 40 distinct cuvées, each tied to a specific parcel or approach. His wines occasionally sit outside the sensory norms required by INAO for Alsace AOC classification, reflecting the deliberate individuality of his style.

Wine region

Alsace, France

Alsace sits in the far northeast corner of France, bordered by the Rhine River to the east and the Vosges mountains to the west. The Vosges act as a rain shadow, making Alsace one of the driest wine regions in France, with warm, dry autumns that allow grapes to ripen fully. The village of Husseren-les-Châteaux, where Domaine Gérard Schueller is based, sits at approximately 380 meters — the highest wine village on the Alsace wine route — with vineyards on southeast and south-facing limestone slopes.

Alsace produces dry and off-dry white wines under the Alsace AOC, with 51 classified Grand Cru sites. The two Grands Crus adjacent to Husseren-les-Châteaux are Pfersigberg (marly-limestone soils, 74.55 hectares, altitude 250–380m) and Eichberg (clay-limestone, 57.62 hectares, altitude 220–340m, south-southeast exposure). Pinot Gris is one of four noble varieties permitted in Alsace Grand Cru production, alongside Riesling, Gewurztraminer, and Muscat. The limestone soils common to this part of the Haut-Rhin tend to produce wines with pronounced mineral character and firm structure.
