Tasting notes

Mata Hari delivers the full orange wine experience without going over the edge: roughly one month on skins gives it amber depth, a gentle tannic grip, and layered notes of dried apricot, hazelnut, and garrigue spice. The Montpeyroux clay-limestone soils and high diurnal shifts keep it grounded and fresh even at 14.5% ABV.

Mata Hari is Julie Brosselin's solo cuvée from Les Cigales dans la Fourmilière, made from 100% Grenache Blanc grown on clay and limestone soils in Montpeyroux, a village in the Hérault at the foot of the Larzac plateau. The vineyards are farmed organically, and the 2018 is bottled as Vin de France rather than under an AOC designation.

After hand-harvesting, the grapes undergo approximately one month of skin maceration. Spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts takes place in clay vessels, followed by aging in old oak barrels. The wine is bottled unfined, unfiltered, and with no added sulfites.

The result is a deep amber-orange wine with a characteristic limpid hue from the extended skin contact. The Grenache Blanc variety contributes ripe stone fruit and candied citrus character, while the maceration adds texture, a gentle tannic grip, and savory complexity — dried herbs, hazelnut, and spice — without becoming heavy or extractive.

At 14.5% ABV, this is a full-expression orange wine that drinks well with food. Montpeyroux's significant diurnal temperature shifts — warm Mediterranean days cooled by winds off the Larzac plateau — help maintain freshness and structure despite the southern heat.

The wine's texture and savory complexity make it well-suited to dishes with weight and fat: roast chicken with herbs, grilled whole fish with olive oil, or a hard aged cheese like Comté or aged Manchego. The phenolic structure cuts through rich dishes where a conventional white would fall flat.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Les Cigales dans la Fourmilière

Les Cigales dans la Fourmilière is the joint domaine of Julie Brosselin and Ivo Ferreira, based in the village of Montpeyroux in the Hérault. The label was established in 2016 when the two combined their existing vineyard holdings. Julie had previously been a co-owner of Le Petit Domaine in the Languedoc. Ivo, a Portuguese-born former sommelier, had been making wine under the Domaine de l'Escarpolette label after apprenticing with Jean-Marc Brignot in the Jura and the Amoreau family at Château Le Puy in Bordeaux. The domaine's name — translating roughly as 'the cicadas in the anthill' — references a folk-rock reworking of La Fontaine's fable about the singing cicada and the industrious ant.

The estate farms approximately 10 hectares of organic vines on the stony, clay-limestone foothills of Larzac, supplemented by fruit purchases from neighboring grower friends. Julie and Ivo work the vineyards together rather than managing separate plots; in the cellar, each retains final say over their own cuvées. Mata Hari is Julie's cuvée. Grapes are hand-harvested and fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. The estate's wines are bottled unfined, unfiltered, and with no added sulfites. Sulfur is used sparingly only when deemed necessary.

Wine region

Languedoc-Roussillon, France

Languedoc-Roussillon stretches along France's Mediterranean coast from the Spanish border to the edge of Provence, encompassing over 700,000 acres of vineyard across the departments of Pyrénées-Orientales, Aude, Hérault, and Gard. The region's geological history has produced an exceptionally varied range of soil types: calcareous clay, limestone scree, galets roulés, schist, sandstone, and pockets of red-ochre ruffes. The climate is broadly Mediterranean — long, hot summers and mild winters — but elevation, proximity to mountain ranges, and distance from the sea create significant variation across the region.

Montpeyroux sits at the foot of the 848-meter Mont St-Baudille in the eastern Hérault, roughly 40 kilometers northwest of Montpellier. The village lies within the Terrasses du Larzac sub-appellation and has historically operated as a named cru under the broader Languedoc AOC. Soils in Montpeyroux are primarily clay and limestone with Jurassic and Quaternary origins; vineyards climb from around 120 to 350 meters. Cooling winds off the Larzac plateau drive significant diurnal temperature variation, slowing ripening and preserving acidity. Montpeyroux was approved as a standalone appellation by France's INAO in February 2026, with the first wines under the new designation expected from the 2026 vintage.
