Tasting notes

This is Tempranillo stripped of oak and extracted weight — short maceration keeps it juicy, earthy, and straight to the point. Red cherry, dried herbs, and a faint mineral salinity make it one of the more interesting Tempranillos at this price. The one-liter format is not a gimmick; it fits the wine's whole personality.

The Litrona Tempranillo is a 1-liter bottling of 100% Tempranillo (known locally as Ull de Llebre, or "eye of the hare") grown organically in the Baix Penedes subzone of Catalonia, Spain. Massimo Marchiori insists the clone used here is the traditional Spanish Tempranillo, distinct from the industrial version Torres introduced and propagated across Catalunya. Vineyards in the Massís de Bonastre sit on calcareous clay soils at 180 to 350 meters elevation, just 5 km from the Mediterranean coast.

Grapes are hand-harvested and undergo a short maceration before pressing into stainless steel tanks, where the wine ferments with indigenous yeasts and ages for a few months before release. No sulfur is added at any stage — a practice Partida Creus adopted completely in 2013. The wine is bottled unfiltered and unfined, in the one-liter format Massimo and Antonella call their "Litrona" project.

The result is a light-to-medium bodied red built for immediate drinking, with red fruit, earthy minerality, and a savory spice edge. Chill it down slightly — it drinks best closer to 55F than room temperature. At 12% ABV, the format and weight make it an easy pour for a weeknight table.

Works well with grilled chicken, pork shoulder, or roasted vegetables. The savory, lightly earthy profile pairs naturally with charcuterie, Manchego, and olives. Chill to around 55F and treat it like a chillable red rather than a traditional Tempranillo.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Partida Creus

Partida Creus was founded in 2001 by Antonella Gerosa and Massimo Marchiori, both architects originally from Piedmont, Italy. The couple moved to Barcelona in the mid-1990s and around 2000 relocated to the remote village of Bonastre in the Baix Penedes, seeking a slower-paced life and dissatisfied with what was available to drink locally. The winery name references the stone crosses historically used by Catalans to mark land boundaries between holdings.

Operating from their property El Maiol in Bonastre, Massimo and Antonella focus on recovering old, low-yielding vines of indigenous varieties that neighboring growers considered obsolete — Sumoll, Garrut, Trepat, Cartoixa Vermell, Vinyater, and others. They farm organically and apply biodynamic principles throughout their vineyards. Hand-harvesting is done with help from their donkey and mule, Orazio and Vincenza. They buy or lease additional abandoned parcels whenever opportunity arises, including a Bobal plot in Narboneta, Cuenca, over 400 km from Bonastre.

In the cellar, all wines ferment with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks. No fining, filtration, or sulfur additions are made at any stage — a zero-SO2 policy Partida Creus has held since 2013. The Litrona range is their one-liter format project, built around drinkability and single-varietal expression at accessible price points. The winery produces over 100,000 bottles annually across its full range of still, sparkling, and vermouth wines.

Wine region

Penedes, Spain

Penedes is a DO located in Catalonia, southwest of Barcelona, stretching from the Mediterranean coast inland toward the pre-coastal Catalan mountain ranges. The region divides into three distinct elevation zones: Baix Penedes in the warm coastal lowlands up to 250 meters, Medio Penedes at 250 to 500 meters, and Alt Penedes rising to 800 meters where cooler conditions preserve natural acidity. Partida Creus works from the Massís de Bonastre in Baix Penedes, where vineyards sit between 180 and 350 meters elevation on calcareous clay soils, approximately 5 km from the sea.

The climate across Penedes is broadly Mediterranean — hot, dry summers and mild winters with rainfall concentrated in spring and autumn, moderated by maritime breezes along the coast. Soils in the Baix Penedes range from sandy and clay at lower elevations to calcareous limestone in the uplands. The DO authorizes a wide range of red and white varieties; red grapes include Garnacha, Cariñena (Samsó), Monastrell, and Tempranillo (Ull de Llebre). As of the 2025 harvest, Penedes became the first wine appellation in the world with 100% certified organic production across all 130 estates.
