Tasting notes

This wine nails the crunchy, low-intervention red format: cherry fruit, roasted pepper, and a faint tobacco note, all in a liter bottle sealed under crown cap for casual pouring. The calcareous clay soils and proximity to Lake Trasimeno keep acidity lively, giving it enough grip to work with food without demanding attention.

Litro Rosso is a 1-liter, everyday red from Conestabile della Staffa, made from Sangiovese and Ciliegiolo grown on calcareous clay and tufa soils at 250–350 meters above sea level in the Trasimeno-Perugino subzone of Umbria. The vineyards sit just outside the hilltop hamlet of Monte Melino, in the province of Perugia, with Lake Trasimeno providing a moderating microclimate that keeps acidity fresh even in warm vintages.

Winemaker Danilo Marcucci uses spontaneous fermentation in open-top tanks with 4 to 6 days of skin maceration, no temperature control, and aging in fiberglass tanks. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered with no added sulfites, under a crown cap in a clear glass liter bottle. The process is as minimal as the format is unpretentious.

On the palate, expect crunchy cherry and red berry fruit with roasted pepper, a touch of earth, and a hint of tobacco on the back end. It drinks lightly, with enough structure to hold up to food but enough freshness to pour cold on a Tuesday. This is a textbook glou-glou red built for the table, not the cellar.

Pour slightly chilled alongside charcuterie, pizza, or a simple pasta with tomato and sausage. The bright acidity and light tannin also work well with roasted vegetables and aged sheep's milk cheese. Grilled chicken thighs or a prosciutto sandwich are natural matches for this style.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

Placed an order. What next?

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. As soon as your order ships from the warehouse, usually within 2-3 business days, this applies to all shipping rates, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking information. 2DAY shipping refers to shipping time; we still need 2-3 business days to prepare an order. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

**If delivery is attempted 3 times without success, or if you fail to retrieve your package from the carrier depot by the stated deadline, the shipping fee will not be refunded to the customer.

Producer profile

Conestabile della Staffa

Conestabile della Staffa is an estate in the hilltop hamlet of Monte Melino, province of Perugia. The two family lines, Conestabile from Orvieto and Della Staffa from Perugia, were united by an arranged marriage in the early 1700s. At the estate's peak in the 1800s, the property covered over 700 hectares of mixed agricultural land, with more than 100 hectares under vine in traditional promiscuous agriculture. It was the most important wine-producing cantina in the Trasimeno-Perugino area, producing over 10,000 hectoliters per vintage. Production collapsed after World War II as the rural workforce moved to cities, and the last vintage from the old cantina was made in 1956. From 1956 to 2015, no wine was made on the property and grapes were sold to the local cooperative.

Winemaking resumed in 2015 when Danilo Marcucci, an enologist who had worked with some of Central Italy's leading natural wine producers, married Alessandra Conestabile della Staffa, the great-granddaughter of one of the estate's original Counts. The 12-hectare vineyard, much of it planted in the early 1970s on its own rootstock, had never been treated with synthetic chemicals. Danilo farms organically, applying only therapeutic doses of sulfur and copper in the vineyard. Fermentations are spontaneous and conducted without temperature control. Wines are aged in fiberglass tanks, bottled without fining or filtration, and released with no or minimal added sulfites depending on the cuvee.

Wine region

Umbria, Italy

Umbria is Italy's only landlocked central region, bordered by Tuscany to the north and west. The Trasimeno-Perugino subzone, in the province of Perugia, is defined by its proximity to Lake Trasimeno, the fourth-largest lake in Italy. The lake acts as a thermal moderator, absorbing heat during the day and releasing it at night, extending the growing season and preserving acidity in the grapes. Vineyards in this area sit on hills at 250–350 meters, with soils composed of calcareous clay and tufa.

The Colli del Trasimeno DOC was established in 1972 and covers red, white, rosé, and sparkling wines from the hills surrounding the lake. Key indigenous red varieties include Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo, and Gamay del Trasimeno (a local strain of Grenache). White varieties include Grechetto and Trebbiano. Wines produced outside DOC rules, or by producers who prefer freedom of blending and viticulture, are labeled IGT Umbria, which applies here. The region has viticulture roots traced to the Etruscans, with documented vine cultivation near Castiglione del Lago as early as 1252.
