Tasting notes

Old-vine Grenache on deep white beach sand over clay produces a perfumed, roses-and-raspberry style that is uncommon in McLaren Vale — light on its feet, with fine sandy tannins and a lively, acid-driven finish. Whole cluster partial carbonic maceration in French puncheons with zero additions means what is in the glass is purely the vineyard.

The Lilies Vineyard sits in McLaren Flat, McLaren Vale, where Grenache vines planted in the 1940s as bush vines were partially brought to trellis around 1980. The soils are deep white beach sand over clay — the same sandy profile found across McLaren Flat that keeps vine vigor in check and stresses the fruit toward concentration and aromatic lift. The vineyard takes its name from the 10 large ponds of water plants, fish, and water lilies that border the site.

For the 2017 vintage, the fruit was hand harvested and fermented whole cluster in French puncheons using indigenous ambient yeast, with a 12 to 14 day partial carbonic maceration and no pumping over. The wine then aged in those same puncheons with malolactic fermentation. No sulfur, fining agents, or filtration were used at any stage.

The result is a light to medium-bodied Grenache with pronounced floral character — roses and dried flower petals — followed by bright raspberry and light red fruit. Fine, sandy tannins from the deep sand soils hold everything together without weight. Acidity is lively. This is closer to a cool-climate Grenache in its delicacy than the plush, full-bodied style the variety can produce in warmer McLaren Vale sites.

James Erskine has not added sulfur to his wines since 2015. All Jauma wines are sealed under crown cap.

Serve slightly chilled at 58 to 60F with roasted chicken, duck breast, or lamb served pink. The wine's sandy tannins and bright acidity also make it a good match for charcuterie, mild soft cheeses, and dishes with fresh herbs. Avoid heavy sauces — the wine's delicacy calls for lighter preparations.

Important Compliance Requirements

FedEx and other carriers we might occasionally use can only deliver wine to customers who are 21 years or older. Someone must be at the address to receive the package, carriers don't just drop a package and leave. They must ensure the person receiving the wine is 21 or older.

Re-shipping a Package

If a package is returned to us after three failed delivery attempts, we can only re-ship the wine upon payment of a re-shipping fee, to be determined based on the shipping address and number of bottles. Shipping wine is extremely expensive. We are sorry about this, but we have no other choice. Please make sure there's always someone at the address you enter as your shipping address.

If you'd like to receive a refund for a package that was returned to us after FedEx made three delivery attempts, we can do that but we must keep a $20 refund fee; FedEx charges us a lot of money for returns, unfortunately, I can't stress this enough.

Re-routing a Package

If you'd like to reroute a package after it's been shipped, we can do so for a $20 re-routing fee. We cannot re-route a package across state borders. For any change of address, please contact us as soon as possible, ideally within 1-2 days from placing the order or we cannot guarantee we'll be able to reroute or change your order's shipping address.

Canceling an Order

If you'd like to cancel an order after it's been shipped, we can do so upon payment of a small cancellation fee – the amount depends on the size of the order. Carriers charge us a lot of money to recall a package en-route.

Heat/Frost damage

We are not responsible for heat- or frost-related issues. We offer ice-packs upon request. Please let us know if you think that there could be heat-related issues. If we don't hear anything from you regarding weather issues before an order is shipped, or if you don't request a hold due to the weather, we are not responsible for heat/frost damage.

1. You will receive an order confirmation email with your order summary.*

2. We need to pick and pack, QA, add printed collateral, and palletize the orders.

3. Please track your package using the tracking service.

4. The carrier will attempt delivery a maximum of 3 times. After 3 delivery attempts, your package will be sent back to our warehouse.**

*Please ensure your email address is correct; otherwise, you will not receive the order and shipping confirmation emails.

Producer profile

Jauma

James Erskine founded Jauma in 2010 after a career as one of Australia's most decorated sommeliers. In 2008 he was awarded Australian Gourmet Traveller Sommelier of the Year, topped the Court of Master Sommeliers exams in Melbourne, received the Negotiants Working with Wine scholarship, and became a Len Evans Scholar. He also holds an Honours degree in Agricultural Science specializing in soil chemistry and studied at the University of California Davis. He served as chief judge of the Adelaide Review's Hot 100 wine show from 2010 to 2013.

Jauma's McLaren Vale vineyards are organically farmed by viticulturalists Fiona Wood and Dave Gartelman, with whom Erskine has maintained a long-term relationship. The Lilies Vineyard in McLaren Flat is owned by Karen and Peter Cahill and managed by Fiona Wood. The vineyards are managed with a goal of preserving the vines for 100 years or more, using organic farming and careful soil maintenance. Erskine has not used sulfur in his wines since 2015.

In the winery, Jauma makes no additions and no subtractions. There are no added yeasts, acids, tannins, sulfur, fining agents, or filtration of any kind. Fermentations proceed with indigenous ambient yeast. The Lilies Grenache in the 2017 vintage was fermented whole cluster in French puncheons with a 12 to 14 day partial carbonic maceration and no pumping, then aged in the same vessel through malolactic fermentation. All Jauma wines are bottled under crown seal.

Wine region

McLaren Vale, Australia

McLaren Vale is a wine region 38 kilometers south of Adelaide in South Australia, centred on the Fleurieu Peninsula with the Gulf of St Vincent to the west and the Mount Lofty Ranges to the east. The Mediterranean climate delivers hot, dry summers moderated by cooling afternoon breezes off the Gulf and cold air draining down from the Ranges. Winter rainfall of 580 to 700mm provides the bulk of annual moisture. Most vineyards sit at roughly 100 meters above sea level on gently undulating land, though subregions vary considerably in elevation, aspect, and soil.

McLaren Vale is one of the most geologically complex wine regions in the world, with over 40 distinct soil types ranging from red-brown sandy loams and grey-brown loamy sands to ironstone, schist, and clay subsoils. The McLaren Flat and Blewitt Springs subregions are particularly known for deep white beach sand over clay — soils that restrict vigor, lower yields, and produce highly aromatic Grenache with fine tannin structure. The region's key red varieties are Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Grenache, with Grenache increasingly recognized as a benchmark variety for producers working with old vines.
